Box Score Baseball Falls to Clemson 14-5 More Information:
Clemson University (13-9) scored eight runs in the first two innings and put up seven doubles in defeating the 23rd-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (21-5) 14-5 March 29 in Clemson, S.C.
Clemson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as the Tigers scored three unearned runs off senior Jake Hurry (East Moline, Ill./Alleman). Herman Demmink walked with one out and advanced to third when junior Michael DeJesus’ (Manapalan, N.J./East Carolina) throw to force him out was wide. With runners on second and third, Tyler Colvin doubled down the left field line, making it 2-0 Tigers. Colvin then came home on a single from Travis Storrer.
Clemson hit five doubles in the second inning, as the Tigers made it 8-0 after two. Colvin had his second two-run double in as many innings. Demmink, Storrer and Kris Harvey all had RBI doubles off Hurry.
The Tigers scored another run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Taylor Harbin. Harbin then came back in the fifth and hit a two-run home run, his fourth of the year, off senior Byron Binda (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) to make it 11-0 Tigers.
Coastal broke the shutout in the sixth inning. Junior Kevin Entsminger (Canton, Mich./College of the Siskiyous) opened the inning with a single and moved to second as senior Chris Todd (Seattle, Wash./Bellevue C.C.) walked. Sophomore Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) loaded the bases with a single to left field. Sophomore Danny Morgan (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian) then drove in two on a single up the middle.
Clemson came right back and scored two in the bottom of the sixth. Ben Hall opened the inning with a triple to center field. Pinch hitter Jesse Ferguson then plated Hall with a single. Ferguson then came home on an RBI groundout by Doug Hogan.
Coastal put up five hits and three runs in the eighth. Duggan and Morgan had infield singles and with two out, DeJesus scored Duggan on a single to left. Sophomore Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) then drove in two on a double to left center, making it 14-5 Clemson.
Hurry went 2.1 innings, giving up six earned runs and 10 hits, striking out two and walking two, to fall to 4-2 on the year.
David Kopp earned the win for the Tigers, going six innings, striking out five and giving up six hits and one earned run.
Junior Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll), Duggan, Morgan and DeJesus had two hits apiece for the Chanticleers, while Morgan and Raber drove in two.
Clemson had 17 hits on the game, and was three doubles away from its school record.
