Box Score Baseball Falls to Clemson 8-1 More Information:
Clemson University (14-9) completed a two-game sweep of the 23rd-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (21-6) 8-1 March 30 in Clemson, S.C.
For the second straight game, Clemson scored unearned runs in the first. Two errors by junior Michael DeJesus (Manapalan, N.J./East Carolina) plated two Clemson runs. Herman Demmink led off reaching on a DeJesus throwing error. Demmink went to second on a ground out, went to third on a fly out and scored on a fielding error from DeJesus. Tyler Colvin, who reached on the error, scored on a single from Travis Storrer to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Clemson scored a single run in the bottom of the second as Stan Widmann singled to open the frame and scored on a Demmink hit.
The Chanticleers scored one in the top of the third. With one out, junior Kevin Entsminger (Canton, Mich./College of the Siskiyous) reached on an error by Widmann. Senior Chris Todd (Seattle, Wash./Bellevue C.C.) singled through the right side to put runners at first and second. Junior Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) drove in Entsminger with two out on a single up the middle.
Colvin started the bottom of the third with a double and scored on a single from Storrer, making it 4-1 Clemson. Andy D’Alessio singled and moved to second on the throw, putting runners on second and third with one out. Storrer came home sacrifice fly from Widmann.
Coastal loaded the bases in the fourth on hits by junior Mike Fuentes (Miami, Fla./North Florida C.C.) and sophomore Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) and an Entsminger walk, but Clemson starter Jeff Hahn got Todd to ground out to end the inning.
Clemson added insurance with three runs in the seventh. Storrer doubled to left to open the inning and moved to third on a single by Kris Harvey. D’Alessio drove home Storrer on a single, making it 6-1. Widmann moved both runners over and Andy Casanova brought in one on a sacrifice fly. D’Alessio scored the final run, scoring on a wild pitch by junior Mike Valter (Bloomington, N.J./Briarcliffe C.C.).
Shefka took his first loss of the season, going six innings, giving up 11 hits and three earned runs with one strikeout. The win goes to Jeff Hahn, who struck out five and gave up an unearned run in six innings.
Costanzo went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Chants. Todd, DeJesus, Fuentes and Vrable had two hits apiece. For Clemson, the 5-6-7 hitters, Storrer, Harvey and D’Alessio, had three hits apiece.
The two teams combined to strand 23 runners, 13 by the Chants. This also is the first multiple-game losing streak of the season for CCU.
Coastal will travel to Edinburg, Texas, to play a three-game set with Texas-Pan American April 1-3. First pitch on Friday is at 8 p.m. EST and can be heard on THE TEAM 93.9 FM in Myrtle Beach.
