Johnson and Johnson Lead CCU at Chanticleer Classic

CONWAY, S.C. – Chasity Johnson (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) and Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) both had NCAA East Regional Qualifying marks as Coastal Carolina's track and field team had a strong meet at the Chanticleer Classic on Saturday, Apr. 9, on the track at Coastal Carolina University.

Sophomore Chasity Johnson set a new personal best and school record with her NCAA East Regional Qualifying long jump of 6.05m/19'10.50". Johnson was a three-time individual event champion on the afternoon, as her high jump, 1.68m/5'6.00", and 200m time, 25.40, were the best marks recorded in those events as well.

Freshman Sylvia Galarza (Millville, N.J./Millville) was a two-event champion for the Lady Chanticleers in the discus and javelin throw. Fellow thrower junior Brittany Reid (McKinney, Texas/Rowlett (Coffeyville J.C.) won the shot put with a 13.93m/45'8.50". Junior Ebony Brown (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) won the 400m dash and freshman DeMiracle Washington (Irmo, S.C./Irmo) won the triple jump for the Lady Chanticleers.

Other event champions for the Lady Chants include seniors Kim Nemergut (Youngstown, Ohio/South Range) and Anne Marie Moutsinga (Galati, Romania, Radu Negru) in the 800m and 1,500m, respectively.

Junior Mark Johnson led the men's program with a new personal best and NCAA East Regional Qualifying marks in the pole vault of 5.31m/17'05.00". The marks was also a new school and conference record. Fellow junior Nelson Oliveria (Coimbra, Portugal/Quinta das Flores) had a season-best time of 1:55.50 in winning the 800m. Sophomore Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) also had season best-time in the 800m of 1:56.81 to place third.

Senior Paul Scheuer (Blackstone, Ill./Dwight Township) won the 400m hurdles for the Coastal men. Scheuer also was part of the 4x400 relay team along with seniors Kendall White (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast), Nick Maxwell (Englishtown, N.J./Notre Dame) and junior Dustin Cowan (Greenville, S.C./Greenville Tech Charter (Western Carolina)) that won that 400m relay.

Sophomore Michael Streater (Chesterfield, S.C./Laurens) set a new personal and school record in the long jump, with his winning mark of 7.12m/23'4.50". Streater broke the mark, 7.10m/23'3.50", set by current Chantcleer Marcus Johnson (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson (Claftin)) at the Battle of the Beach earlier this season.

Both Coastal's men's and women's track team's captured team victories with their scores of 197 and 277, respectively at the meet.

Coastal Carolina's track and field program will be traveling next week to participate in the Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championship held on the campus of VMI in Lexington, Va. on Apr. 14-16.
