Matrka Named First Team Academic All-American by CoSIDA

Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis player Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) and women’s golfer Line Cordes (Bronderslev, Denmark/Western Carolina) were named to the 2004-05 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Team (University Division), the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced recently. Matrka was named to the First Team, while Cordes was a Second Team selection.
Matrka was named an Academic All-American for the second straight season, as she was a Third Team selection after her junior season. A biology major with a 3.995 grade point average, Matrka was named the Big South Conferences Women’s Tennis Player of the Year after going 16-4 in singles play and 14-3 in doubles action during the regular season. The mark included a 7-0 singles record in the Big South. Matrka earned First Team All-Big South honors this past season in both singles and doubles, making her a seven-time All-Big South honoree. She finished her career third all-time at Coastal in singles wins (91) and doubles victories (91). Matrka also was the Big South Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
