Naraine Named Assistant Women's Soccer Coach

CONWAY, S.C. –The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer program and head coach Karrie Miller have announced the hiring of Rohan Naraine as the Lady Chants new assistant coach. Naraine is no stranger to the Coastal women’s soccer program, having been an assistant coach with CCU for the 2002 season.

Naraine spent the last two seasons as the head women’s soccer coach at Southern University. Naraine was Southern’s first-ever head coach, and in the inaugural 2003 season, he led the Jaguars to a third-place finish in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and a 6-7 overall record. He also coached Ashley Boutte, who led the NCAA in points per game (2.2 ppg).

During the 2002 season, Naraine helped the Chanticleers to their first winning season in school history and helped in bringing in a recruiting class that would be part of a Big South regular season championship in 2003.

"When I was here before, it was a great experience," Naraine said. "The most exciting part about returning is that the freshman I had before will be seniors and the juniors will be the players I recruited. That senior class is special.

"I’m glad that Coach Miller gave me the chance to come back," Naraine continued. "A lot of the players know me so I think it’s going to be an easy transition."

Naraine brings 19 years of coaching experience to the Lady Chants, coaching at the high school, collegiate and international levels. He spent four years as the head coach of Coker College’s women’s soccer program before his first stint at Coastal.

Prior to accepting the position at Coker in 1998, Naraine spent eight years at Beaufort Academy in Beaufort, S.C., where he served as Athletic Director and Head Coach of the boy’s and girl’s soccer programs. His teams won eight state championships and he was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach of the Year eight consecutive seasons.

Naraine is a native of Guyana, South America, and grew up in London, England. He lived in England for 10 years before moving to the United States at the age of 16. In America, Naraine played soccer at Theodore Roosevelt High in Washington, D.C. He was team captain of the 1980 State Championship team and was selected the Washington Post’s "Player of the Year."

Naraine and his wife, Nalini, also a Guyana native, were married in 1995 in Guyana. They have a four-year old daughter, Nikki.

Coastal returns eight starters and 12 letterwinners to the 2005 squad, including 10 of its top 12 point leaders. The Lady Chants open the season Friday, Aug. 26, at 6 p.m., hosting Elon.
