Baseball's Fall World Series Split After Day One

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University baseball team opened the Chanticleer World Series Oct. 6 at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field with two six-inning games. The two teams split the opening day, with the Black Team taking the opener 8-3 and the Teal Team winning game two 3-0.
The Black Team used a six-run first inning to take game one. Sophomore David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) highlighted the inning with a two-run opposite field home run. Black added a run in both the third and fifth innings for its eight runs. Senior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) had a two-run home run for the Teal in the fourth frame.
Anderson and sophomore David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) had three hits apiece, while freshman Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) and senior Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) had two hits for the Black. Senior John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) and freshman Eric Godsy (Edmond, Okla./North) had two hits to lead the Teal.
Senior Andy DeLaGarza (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) earned the win for the Black Team, striking out three in four innings. Freshman Phillip Mozingo (Florence, S.C./West Florence) earned the save, striking out two.
Game two was a pitchers duel between Anderson and sophomore Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill). After three scoreless innings, the Teal team broke through for three runs in the fourth. Gagg then struck out eight in five innings, allowing only two infield hits. Anderson had four strikeouts in five innings and did not allow an earned run. Senior Travis Risser (Palmyra, Pa./James Madison) earned the save by pitching a scoreless sixth.
The third game of the Chanticleer World Series will take place Saturday at 10 a.m.
