The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (12-5-1, 6-2 Big South) hosts the 2006 Big South Women’s Soccer Championships Nov. 2-5 at the Coastal Carolina University Soccer Field. The tournament will start with four quarterfinal games Thursday, Nov. 2. The Lady Chanticleers will play in the nightcap against seventh-seeded Radford (7-10, 3-5 Big South) at 7:30 p.m. Coastal ended its regular season with a thrilling 4-3 win over High Point Oct. 28.

SCOUTING RADFORD: The Highlanders are coming off a 2-0 loss to Big South regular season champion Winthrop Oct. 28. Radford ended the season tied for sixth in the standings, but lost a head-to-head tiebreak with High Point. Leading the way for the Highlanders in goals is McKenzie Vergara with eight, while Lisa Channon has a team-leading 21 points. Annaliese Yoder started the final two games for Radford and has a 2.57 goals-against average.

SERIES VS. RADFORD: The season series with Radford is tied at 3-3-2. Earlier this season, the Lady Chanticleers defeated Radford 2-1 in Radford, Va., as senior Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) scored a goal off a free kick in the 85th minute to break a one-all tie. Sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) has Coastal’s other goal in the first half.

BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Coastal is 0-4-3 all-time in the Big South Tournament. The Lady Chants advanced to the semifinals in 2001 with a 0-0 tie against Radford in which Coastal won on a shootout. Coastal fell in the first round to Charleston Southern 2-1 last year.

BUZZER BEATER BEATS PANTHERS: Sophomore Heather Haupt (West Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored with just eight seconds remaining to give Coastal a 4-3 win over High Point. It was Haupt’s fourth goal of the season, her second game winner and moved the Lady Chants record to 6-1 in one-goal games.

GERHARDT ASSISTS IN WIN: Senior Stepheney Gerhardt (Mohawk, N.Y./Ilion (Herkimer C.C.)) assisted on Haupt’s game-winning goal, capping off a stellar night for the midfielder. Gerhardt assisted on the game’s first goal by junior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) in the first half, then scored herself in the 66th minute. Gerhardt currently is tied for fourth in the Big South with five assists.

SENIOR NIGHT SUCCESS CONTINUES: Coastal celebrated Senior Night at the CCU Soccer Field with a 1-0 win over UNC Asheville Oct. 21. Coastal honored its eight seniors at halftime of the match. Coastal has won its last four games held on Senior Night and the Lady Chanticleers outscored its opponent 11-0 in those games.

COASTAL CONTINUES TO SHINE AT HOME: Coastal ended its regular season home schedule with a 5-1 record, including the 1-0 win over UNC Asheville Oct. 21. Over the last four seasons, Coastal is an impressive 22-6-2 at the CCU Soccer Field.

HAUPT SHINES AGAINST LONGWOOD: Sophomore Heather Haupt (West Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored both goals in Coastal’s 2-1 win over Longwood Oct. 16. It was Haupt’s second and third goals of the season and now three of her five career goals have come against Longwood. She had a tally in the 6-4 win over the Lancers last season.

STOLL SAVES DAY VS. UNCA: Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had six saves, including three in the last 12 minutes of the game, to preserve the shutout in the 1-0 win over UNC Asheville Oct. 21. Stoll now has 14 shutouts in her career, just 1.5 shutouts away from Candice Doten’s school record. On the season, Stoll has a 1.43 goals-against average and a .690 save percentage.

CHANTS BREAK WINLESS DROUGHT IN RADFORD: Coastal won for the first time in Radford, Va., Oct. 14, defeating the Highlanders 2-1. Coastal was 0-2-1 lifetime against Radford before senior Simone Borucinski’s (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) goal in the 85th minute gave Coastal the one-goal win.

STOLL STREAK IN GOAL CONTINUES: Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) has played in all of Coastal’s last 3059:44 in goal, dating back to the first half of The Citadel game Sept. 6, 2005. Stoll is the only goalkeeper in the Big South to play all of her team’s minutes this season.

NARAINE REACHES MILESTONE IN VMI WIN: Head Coach Rohan Naraine won his 50th career game in Coastal’s 2-0 win over VMI Oct. 8 Naraine is in his first season as head coach of Coastal after two stints as an assistant coach for the Lady Chanticleers. Naraine also has had head coaching stops at Coker College and Southern.

CHANTS HAVE KEYDETS’ NUMBER: Coastal’s 2-0 win over VMI was the Lady Chants third straight shutout against the Keydets. Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) has been in goal in all three contests, accounting for three of her 14 career shutouts.

WEILER, GUNNING SCORE FIRST HALF GOALS: Senior Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) and junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored a goal each in the 4-2 loss to Winthrop Oct. 4 and a 2-0 win over VMI Oct. 8. Weiler earned the game-winning goal in the game against the Keydets, while Gunning’s goal total is now seven after the two tallies.

STREAK SNAPPED AGAINST WINTHROP: Coastal’s seven-game Big South winning streak was snapped in a 4-2 loss to Winthrop Oct. 4. Coastal also lost for the first time at home since a 4-3 setback to High Point Sept. 25, 2005.

GELSOMINO NETS GAME WINNER: Junior Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England)) scored just 32 seconds into overtime to lift Coastal to a 2-1 overtime win over Liberty Sept. 24. It was Gelsomino’s first goal as a Lady Chanticleer and gave CCU its third overtime win in the past two seasons.

MONROE MOVES UP CAREER GOALS LIST: Sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) moved into second place on Coastal’s all-time goals list when she scored in the Lady Chants 2-0 win over Campbell Sept. 11. Monroe now has 25 goals and 55 career points, which is good for third on Coastal’s all-time list.

GUNNING GETS DOUBLE AT BSC: Junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored twice in Coastal’s 3-1 win over Birmingham-Southern Sept. 15. The junior put the Lady Chants up at the 6:29 mark off an assist from senior Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College). She then scored at the 81:49 mark unassisted.

WHAT A WEEKEND FOR WEILER: Senior Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) had a great weekend in Alabama, helping the Lady Chants to two wins. Weiler assisted on the game-winning goal by junior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) in the 3-1 win over Birmingham-Southern Sept. 15. She then had the game-winning goal and an assist in the 3-1 win over Alabama A&M Sept. 17.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: After freshman Stacey Dillon (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) assisted on a goal in a 2-1 loss against Francis Marion, the Lady Chanticleers have 14 players with at least one point on the season. Sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) leads the team with 19 points.

HUMPHRIES’ PK A FIRST FOR COASTAL: Junior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) attempted Coastal’s first penalty kick of the season in the 2-0 win over Campbell Sept. 11. She was successful, which also was the first goal in a Coastal uniform for Humphries.

IT’S BEEN AWHILE: Coastal fell to Elon 2-0 Sept. 7, marking the first time Coastal has failed to score since a 4-0 loss to UNC Asheville Sept. 18, 2005.

MONROE NAMED BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced today (Aug. 29). Monroe earns Player of the Week honors for the third time in her career.

Monroe scored three goals in two games this past weekend as the Lady Chanticleers went 1-1 to start the season. She scored two goals in the second half in helping CCU to a 5-1 win in the season opener over West Georgia Aug. 25. She then scored Coastal’s lone goal in the first half of a 4-1 loss to George Mason Aug. 27. Monroe now has 20 goals in her young Coastal career, tying her with Kristina Fisher for second all-time on the CCU goals list.

QUICK START FOR McCOLL: Sophomore Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) scored just 25 seconds into the 2-2 tie against Wofford Sept. 4. McColl connected on a 25-yard strike that went over Wofford goalkeeper Austin Somers. It was the third-fastest goal in Coastal history.

GUNNING GETS GOAL IN FIRST CCU GAME: Junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) had Coastal’s first goal of the season on a header in the 5-1 win over West Georgia. It was Gunning’s first game as a Chanticleer and she followed up that goal with an assist in the win over the Wolves.

COASTAL PICKED SECOND IN BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL: The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team has been picked second in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll, the League office announced August 15.

The Lady Chanticleers earned 126 points, including two first-place votes, to trail only 2005 Big South Tournament champion Liberty in the poll. The Lady Flames earned 147 points and 11 first-place votes. The Lady Chants were followed by High Point (113 points), Charleston Southern (107 points, three first-place votes), UNC Asheville (101 points, two first-place votes), Radford (74 points), Birmingham-Southern (71 points), Winthrop (44 points) and VMI (27 points).

MONROE NAMED BIG SOUTH PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) has been chosen the Big South Preseason Player of the Year, the conference office announced August 15.

Monroe, last season’s Big South Freshman of the Year, garnered five first-place votes and 13 points, defeating Charleston Southern’s Emma Mattsson by three points. Monroe led the Lady Chants and tied for the Big South lead with 17 goals in 2005, breaking Coastal’s single-season goals record. She tied for 11th in the country in goals per game and was named to the All-Big South First Team and All-Tournament Team. The sophomore was a two-time Big South Player of the Week and had seven goals in seven Big South matches.

BIG SOUTH LEADERS: Monroe is tied for second in the Big South in goals (8) and points (19)... She is tied with junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) in the goals category... Seniors Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) and Stepheney Gerhardt (Mohawk, N.Y./Ilion (Herkimer C.C.)) are tied for fourth in assists with five... Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) is fourth in goals-against average (1.43).

NEW LOOK CCU: Coastal Carolina will have 17 newcomers on this year’s squad, 12 of whom are freshman. In the 2-1 exhibition win over Jacksonville Aug. 19, nine newcomers played while junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) and freshman Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) earned a start against the Dolphins. Gunning scored Coastal’s first goal against JU on a pass from fellow newcomer Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England)).
