The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (2-5) gave up 10 runs in the first two innings and had only two hits as the Chanticleers fell to fourth-ranked University of North Carolina (4-0) 15-0 Feb. 21 in Chapel Hill, N.C.   The Tar Heels sent 10 men to the plate in the first, scoring six runs.  Mike Cavasinni singled and stole second, then scored on a single from Reid Fronk.  Fronk stole second, went to third on a passed ball as Jay Cox walk and scored on a single from Chad Flack.  Benji Johnson hit a dribbler to first and junior John Mariotti’s (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) throw was not handled by junior Matt Sutton (La Grange, N.C./UNC Wilmington), which scored Cox and Flack.  Matt Spencer then brought in two with a double and he scored on a double by Tim Federowicz.   North Carolina then added a four-spot in the second, taking a 10-0 lead.  Fronk was hit by a pitch and took second on a Cox single.  Flack loaded the bases with a single and after a pop out, Spencer drove in two with a single.  Federowicz brought in the ninth and 10th runs with a double to right center.   Freshman Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill) got out of a jam in the fifth inning.  Kyle Shelton opened the inning with a single and moved to third on a double from Federowicz.  But Gagg got Bryan Steed and Cavasinni to ground out and Fronk to fly out to end the threat.   Coastal earned its first hit in the sixth inning, a single by junior Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) and loaded the bases with walks to junior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) and Sutton, but Tar Heel reliever Adam Warren got junior Brant Peacher (Milton, Fla./Florida State) to ground out to end the inning.  Cox then started the bottom of the sixth with an opposite field home run, giving UNC an 11-run lead.   North Carolina wrapped up its scoring in the eighth, plating four runs on RBI singles from Frederowicz and Joe Pietropaoli and a two-run double from Garrett Gore.   Duggan and freshman David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) had Coastal’s two hits on the day.  For North Carolina, Federowicz had five hits and Spencer was 4-for-5.   Mariotti took the loss.  He gave up seven hits and nine earned runs in 1.1 innings.  Gagg had a solid outing, going 3.2 innings with three strikeouts.  The win went to the Tar Heels’ Luke Putkonen, who gave up only the Duggan hit and struck out two.   Coastal will head to Coastal Federal Field for the Baseball at the Beach Tournament this weekend.  Coastal faces Virginia Commonwealth Friday, Feb. 25 at 12 p.m.   NOTES: Senior Mike Valter (Bloomingdale, N.J./Briarcliffe C.C.) made his first appearance of the season, going one inning, giving up one hit and no runs …North Carolina now leads the overall series 33-12… Both Coastal hits were in the number-two spot in the lineup.
