CONWAY, S.C. – Old Dominion scored three unanswered runs over the fifth and sixth innings to defeat No. 8 Coastal Carolina 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium, evening this weekend's Sun Belt Conference series at one game apiece.
Trailing 3-0 early, the Chanticleers answered in the bottom of the second inning. Trace Mazon delivered an RBI single to bring home Rex Watson to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Coastal continued to chip away in the third inning as Walker Mitchell ripped an RBI double to left field, plating Dean Mihos, trimming the Monarch lead to 3-2.
The Chanticleers pulled even an inning later when Brice Estep launched his eighth home run of the season with a solo shot over the the wall in left field to tie the game at 3-3.
Old Dominion regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning and added two more insurance runs in the sixth while keeping the Coastal offense quiet down the stretch. The Monarch pitching staff held the Chanticleers scoreless over the final five innings to secure the win.
With the loss, the Chanticleers fell to 34-16 overall and 20-6 in Sun Belt Conference play.
Coastal Carolina and Old Dominion will meet in the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
