Men's Tennis Falls to #10 Ohio State 7-0

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team (11-5) dropped its non-conference match to #10 Ohio State (12-1) 7-0 on Monday, March 20 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

The number one singles match saw sophomore David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) fall to junior Chris Klingemann 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) while CCU junior Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) was defeated by freshman Bryan Koniecko in the second singles match 6-1, 6-2. Junior Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen's Mary College) dropped the third singles match to junior Devin Mullings 6-0, 6-3.

The fourth singles match was lost by Coastal's junior Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) 6-1, 6-0 to freshman Steven Moneke and junior Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) was downed by senior Dennis Mertens 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth singles match. Senior Brian Dowis (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) lost the sixth and final singles match to sophomore Drew Eberly 6-2, 6-2.

The Chanticleers lost the doubles point by losing to all three matches to the OSU doubles teams. At the first seed, the Chants Quibell/Redding were defeated by Ross Wilson/Scott Green 8-2. In the second doubles seeding, Caress/Taylor were downed by Mullings/Klingemann, 8-4. The third doubles seed was dropped by the CCU doubles team of Weisband/Mellis to Eberly/Koniecko 8-1.

"We fought hard against a national power today," head coach Chris Powers stated. "I can't say enough about our program's development this spring but who we truly are as a team is yet to be defined. We'll have to be willing to go to the next level this weekend and that mission begins on the practice court tomorrow."

The Chants host non-conference opponent North Carolina A&T on March 24 at 1:30 p.m.
