Men's Tennis Sweeps Connecticut 7-0

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team (8-3, 0-1 Big South) swept its non-conference match against the University of Connecticut (0-5) 7-0 on Tuesday, March 7. For CCU it was the fourth consecutive match it has won.

The number one singles match saw sophomore David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) defeat senior Sho Sato 6-3, 6-3. CCU junior Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) defeated senior Craig Helstowski in the second singles match 6-0, 6-0 while junior Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen's Mary College) won the third singles match over freshman Jeff Klar 6-0, 6-0. The fourth singles match was won by Coastal junior Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) 6-1, 6-4 over sophomore Christian Malerba. Senior Brian Dowis (Yorktown, Va./York)) defeated freshman Ben Schueler 6-4, 6-2 in the fifth singles match. Junior Ryan Weisband (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) completed the singles sweep over senior Joey Michaels 6-2, 7-5.

The Chanticleers took the doubles point by defeating two of the three Connecticut doubles teams. At the first seed, the Chants Quibell/Redding defeated Helstowski/ Matt Caravalho 8-0. In the second doubles seeding Caress/Taylor defeated Sato/Schueler 8-2. The third doubles seed went to Connecticut as the team of Malerba/Michaels defeated CCU's Mellis/Dowis 8-0.

The Chants have a busy weekend of matches next weekend as CCU hosts three home matches. The weekend begins on Friday, March 10 with a conference match against UNC Asheville at 2 p.m. The Chants host conference rival Liberty at 12 p.m. on March 11. Non-conference foe James Madison comes in for the final match of the weekend on March 12 at 12 p.m.
