2006 Season Ends For Women's Tennis

BIG SOUTH AWARDS: The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team received five Big South honors at the Big South Conference banquet, in Birmingham Alabama, Wednesday, April 12. The event was held prior to the start of the 2006 Big South Conference Women’s Tennis Championship April 13-15.
Head Coach Jody Davis was named the Big South Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Davis has been named Coach of the Year four times while at Coastal. He guided the Lady Chanticleers to a 20-3 overall record and 6-1 in Big South matches during 2006. Coastal had a 14-match winning streak from Feb. 4-Mar. 17 including three Big South matches.
Sophomore Sofie Ahlberg was named to the Big South Conference singles team. Ahlberg has marked a 19-2 overall record and is 5-1 in league play for the regular season. Ahlberg was the 2005 Freshman of the Year in the Big South Conference. Junior Hayley Rudman also was named to the All-Big South Conference singles team. Rudman finished the regular season with an overall record of 15-6 and was 5-1 in Big South play.
Senior Virginie Dinh and Rudman were named to the All-Big South Conference doubles team. Dinh and Rudman have an overall record of 16-3 and are 4-2 in league play, Dinh was named All-Big South in doubles during the 2005 season as well.
Senior Petra Jantti was also named to the All-Academic team with a 3.67 in business management.
CLIMBING TO THE TOP: Senior Petra Jantti has 79 career singles wins, holding the fourth spot on CCU's all-time list. Virginie Dinh has 57 total singles wins, tied for eighth on CCU's all-time list,
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Petra Jantti is now first on CCU's all-time doubles list with 95 wins. Virginie Dinh has recorded 65 doubles wins, fifth on CCU's all-time doubles list.
PERFECT SINGLES SEASON: Amy Pazahanick finished the regular season with a 21-1 record, 6-0 in Big South Conference play. Pazahanick finished the regular doubles season with a doubles record of 19-2 overall and a 6-1 Big South record.
HANDLING THE HIGHLANDERS: The second-seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers defeated No. 7 seed Radford, 4-0, in the first round of the 2006 Big South Women’s Tennis Championship Thursday, April 13 at the Birmingham Southern College Tennis Complex.
Coastal Carolina jumped out to the 1-0 lead taking the doubles point. Petra Jantti and Amy Pazahanick downed Radford’s Camila Noldin and Carolina Downs 8-3 at the No. 2 flight. At No. 3 doubles, Sofie Ahlberg and Sarize Coetzee defeated Ashton Downs and Antonietta Iosue, 8-3.
In singles action, Hayley Rudman knocked off Daniela Milano in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 3 flight. At No. 4, Pazahanick defeated Downs, 6-0, 6-1. Coetzee took the No. 6 flight 6-1, 6-2, over Alexandra Spector.
FIGHTING THE FLAMES: The second-seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers defeated No. 6 seed Liberty, 4-0, in the semifinals of the 2006 Big South Women’s Tennis Championship Friday, April 14 at the Birmingham-Southern College Tennis Complex.
Coastal Carolina grabbed the doublespoint to jump out to the early 1-0 lead. Virginie Dinh and Hayley Rudman downed Jonita Randolph and Martyna Hanusz 8-3 at the No. 1 flight. At No. 3 doubles, Sofie Ahlberg and Sarize Coetzee of defeated Erica Fredstrom and Livia Branco, 8-6.
In singles action, Rudman defeated Fredstrom in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 3 flight. At No. 4, Amy Pazahanick defeated Hanusz, 6-2, 6-1. Coetzee took the No. 6 flight 6-1, 6-1, over Branco.
FALLING IN THE FINALS: The top-seeded Winthrop Eagles defeated No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina, 4-2, to win the 2006 Big South Women’s Tennis Championship Saturday afternoon at the Birmingham-Southern College Tennis Complex. The win marks their fifth-straight League title.
Coastal Carolina grabbed the doubles point jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. Petra Jantti and Amy Pazahanick downed Winthrop’s Yolandra Araujo and Patricia Coimbra 8-3 at the No. 2 flight. At No. 3 doubles, Sofie Ahlberg and Sarize Coetzee defeated Larisa Bekmetova and Alexandra Dyckman, 8-0. The Eagles’ lone doubles win came at No. 1 as Paula Takahashi and her partner Ana Paula Noves defeated Virginie Dinh and Hayley Rudman, 8-1.
In singles action, Winthrop battled back to win four matches. Noves knocked off Dinh in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 1 flight. At No. 2, Coimbra defeated Jantti, 6-1, 6-2. Araujo took the No. 3 flight 6-3, 6-7 (10-12), 6-2, over Chanticleer netter Rudman. Takahashi downed Pazahanick 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 slot. Coastal’s lone singles win came at No. 6 as Coetzee defeated Dyckman, 6-2, 6-0.
