Box Score Chanticleer Baseball Shuts Out Texas-Pan American 2-0 More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. – Three Coastal Carolina University (19-22) pitchers struck out 11 Texas-Pan American (20-25) batters and the Chanticleers scored runs in the second and fourth innings to defeat the Broncs 2-0 April 28 in Conway, S.C.
Freshman Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) had another solid outing, striking out nine Broncs in seven innings to record his fourth win of the season. He gave up only six hits and one walk. Freshman David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and junior Travis Risser (Palmyra, Pa./James Madison) came on in the ninth, giving up one hit and one strikeout to record his first save of the season.
In the second, junior Matt Sutton (La Grange, N.C./UNC Wilmington) opened the inning by being hit by a pitch. He went to second as freshman David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) reached on an error by Chris Lozano. Senior Mike Fuentes (Miami, Fla./North Florida C.C.) advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt and Sutton scored on a groundout by sophomore Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell).
Sappelt reached on another error by Lozano, this time with one out in the fourth. Sappelt stole second and scored on a Martin single to left.
Texas-Pan American threatened in the sixth. After Fleet struck out Jason Buhagiar, the Broncs had three straight singles from Louie Alamia, T.J. Gilmer and Osiel Flores. Fleet battled and struck out Zach Smith and got Patrick Brooks to ground into a fielder’s choice. UTPA had two runners on with one out in the seventh, but Fuentes picked off Lozano at first and struck out Buhagiar to end the inning.
Junior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) had three hits for the Chants, while freshman Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and junior Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) had two hits apiece. For the Broncs, Honeycutt was 2-for-4.
Chad Linder took the loss for UTPA despite giving up no earned runs. He gave up nine hits and struck out one Chant. Aaron Guerra struck out three in 2.1 innings of relief.
Coastal and Texas-Pan American wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, April 29, starting at 1 p.m.
NOTES: After Texas-Pan American won the first game of the overall series 15-6 in 2005, Coastal has now won three straight contests versus the Broncs... Coastal now has been errorless in four out of its last five games... Fleet was one strikeout away from his career high... It was Coastal’s first shutout since opening night in a 9-0 win over Campbell Feb. 11... Sutton is now tied for the team lead with 10 stolen bases.
