Baseball End-of-Year Notes
The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (30-27) ended its season in the 2006 Bojangle’s Big South Tournament. The Chanticleers fell to third-seeded High Point 1-0 in the opening round. Coastal came back the next day to defeat UNC Asheville 6-1, before falling in a 4-3 heartbreaker to Winthrop May 26. The Chants did win eight of its last 10 games and finished second in the League in team earned-run-average. PEACHER NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Coastal Carolina University junior baseball player Brant Peacher (Milton, Fla./Florida State) was selected to the 2006 Bojangle’s Big South All-Tournament Team, it was announced May 26 after the championship game in Conway, S.C. Peacher, who was the All-Tournament Team's designated hitter, hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning in helping the Chanticleers to a 6-1 win over UNC Asheville May 25. It was Peacher’s fifth home run of the season. The junior ended the season with a .291 batting average, a team-leading 13 doubles and a .456 slugging percentage. ERA NOSEDIVES IN LAST 20 GAMES: The Coastal Carolina pitching staff saved its best performances for the last 20 games, putting up an impressive 2.43 ERA as the Chants went 14-6. Freshman Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill) led Coastal with a 4-0 record and a minuscule 0.98 ERA. Junior Andy DeLaGarza (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) and classmate John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) had ERA’s of 2.11 and 2.39, respectively. Junior Travis Risser (Palmyra, Pa./James Madison) had three saves and a 1.86 ERA in the last 20 games. Coastal had 136 strikeouts compared to 63 walks in the last 20 contests. MORE GAGG NOTES: Freshman Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill) ended the season ranked second in the Big South with a 2.95 ERA. The freshman went 4-1 with 49 strikeouts in 76.1 innings. Gagg earned Big South Pitcher of the Week honors after a complete-game 2-0 win over VMI May 8. In the 7-2 win over Campbell, Gagg went the distance, striking out six and allowing only two runs. Gagg’s ERA is Coastal’s 10th best all-time in the Division I era. MARIOTTI DOES YEOMAN'S WORK VS. WINTHROP: Junior John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) saved maybe his best performance for his last in a 4-3 loss to Winthrop May 26. Mariotti went the first five innings, allowing only an unearned run and four hits before a 1:45 rain delay. The junior then came back and pitched three-plus innings, retiring nine in a row before a walk to lead off the ninth ended his outing. Mariotti ended the season with a team-leading five wins and 39 strikeouts in 50.1 innings. COASTAL WINS #30 OVER UNCA: With its 6-1 win over UNC Asheville May 25, Coastal earned its 30th win of the season, marking the ninth straight season that the Chants have achieved that mark. Coastal also has won 40, 50 and 30 games in the past three years.
