Baseball's Salmon Signs Free Agent Contract with Philadelphia

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s Kevin Salmon (Brentwood, N.Y./Briarcliffe C.C.) has signed a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies and will report to its short-season affilliate in Batavia, N.Y., the organization announced.
Salmon appeared in 21 games during the 2006 season for the Chanticleers, making seven starts. He had a 4-4 record with a 4.68 earned-run average and 49 strikeouts in 57.2 innings. He won his last two decisions of the season, including striking out seven in 6.2 innings while giving up only three hits and no runs in a win over Radford May 12. He struck out a season- and career-high nine in a 22-6 win over George Mason Feb. 19. Against Tennessee on Feb. 26, he struck out five in five innings. For his career at Coastal, Salmon was 5-5 with 71 strikeouts in 98.1 innings.
Salmon joins Mike Fuentes (Miami, Fla./North Florida C.C.) as 2006 Chanticleers in the Phillies organization. Fuentes currently is playing for the Phillies team in the Gulf Coast League.
Coastal ends its season with a 30-27 record and a third-place finish in the Big South regular season.
