Volleyball Gets First Win Defeating Niagara 3-0

BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team improves to 1-3 on the season with a 30-20, 30-18, 30-20 win over Niagara University (0-1) Friday night in the Western New York Invitational.
Niagara led the first game 6-4 until senior Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) served six-straight points to take a 10-6 lead after which Coastal never looked back. Junior Nakia Thompson Lexington, S.C./Lexington) had nine kills in the match.
The Chanticleers led the second game 6-0 until Niagara rallied to tie at 12-12 which Rinne again stepped up and took control of the ball serving 12-straight points for Coastal on Niagara's six hitting errors. Rinne ended the night with six kills and ten digs.
In game three, Coastal used three blocks to open with a 5-1 lead, Niagara answered back to bring it to another 12-12 tie until the Lady Chants scored 11 unanswered points.
Freshman Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) also had solid performances for Coastal. Nyhof had five kills while Pollard scooped up nine digs. As a team, Coastal had 35 kills on a .242 hitting percentage with eight team blocks.
Niagara was led by Raelean Rush who had seven kills and Sara Mancini who had 11 digs. As a team, Niagara had 27 kills on a -.065 hitting percentage with 34 errors and just one team block.
"It's good to to get a first win under our belt and to start off the tournament with a win," Head Coach Kristen Bauer stated. "Everyone played tonight and everyone contributed. We're just excited for tomorrow."
The Lady Chanticleers continue play in the Western New York Invitational tomorrow when they face Fordham University (1-2) at noon and the University at Buffalo (3-2) who defeated Quinnipac 3-0 earlier Friday night.
