COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team participated in the University of South Carolina Invitational this past weekend. Competition began on Friday, Oct. 12 and lasted until Sunday, Oct. 14.
In singles action, freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilla, Brazil/Galois) had an impressive showing in B-4 Singles. Checchia won his Round of 16, quarterfinal and semifinal matches in order to advance to the finals. However, Checchia came just short of claiming the individual title as he lost to Alan Donald 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
Junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) had strong showings in both singles and doubles. Withers survived the Round of 32 and Round of 16 in order to advance to the quarterfinals of B-1 Singles. In doubles action, Withers and freshman Omar El Bouskouri (Meznes, Morocco/Schiller) advanced to the finals of B-2 doubles. The pair scored an 8-2 win over Caleb Barnes/Ryan Miller and Miki Artero/Tommy Petrich in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively. Withers and El Bouskouri beat Mickael Boyer/Steven Myers 8-4 in the semifinals. However, the pair fell to Conor Smith and Drew Sosebee 8-5 in the championship game.
Also competing and advancing out of their first rounds in singles action were sophomore Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) in A-2 singles and senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) in A/B Singles. Although they did not survive their first round, junior Chris Ross-da Silva (Estoril, Portugal/ADLC Online (Jacksonville), sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas) and El Bouskouri all advanced in their respective consolation brackets.
In other doubles action, Mellis and Vlaskin advanced to the semifinals in B-1 Doubles, scoring a 9-7 win over Andre Bubnov/William John in the Round of 16 and a 8-4 victory over Guilherme Fonseca/George Wilkinson in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Checchia and Ramos made it to the quarterfinals in B-3 Doubles.
