Baseball's Risser to Join Rays Organization
CONWAY, S.C. – Former Coastal Carolina University pitcher Travis Risser (Palmyra, Pa./James Madison) inked a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays organization. Risser will join the Rays spring training in St. Petersburg this March. Risser is coming off an outstanding season for the Washington Wild Things in the Frontier League. Risser was 4-2 with a 1.09 earned-run average and six saves in 25 games. He had 42 strikeouts in 49.2 innings and helped the Wild Things to the Frontier League championship series. Risser was named the eighth best prospect in the Frontier League by Baseball America. Risser was 2-1 with a 5.25 earned-run average in 20 appearances for the Chanticleers in 2007. In 24 innings pitched, Risser struck out 16, while walking nine. He earned three saves, including preserving a 3-2 win over Virginia Feb. 11, and got the win in the Big South Tournament championship game against Liberty. In the game against the Flames, Risser allowed only one hit in three innings pitched. He also pitched three of Coastal’s four games in the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional, pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Risser joins Brett Grandstrand as former Coastal players in the Rays organization.
