CLEMSON, S.C. –The 17th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (12-3) managed just five hits as the Chanticleers fell 4-0 to sixth-ranked Clemson (8-3) March 7 in Clemson, S.C. Sophomore David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) was the hard-luck loser in making his second start of the season.
Coastal had a chance of scoring in the third as sophomore David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) singled and senior Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) reached on an error. Senior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) then singled to right and Sappelt tried to score, but rightfielder Wilson Boyd threw him out to keep the game scoreless.
Clemson struck first in the third as Brad Chalk and Taylor Harbin hit back-to-back doubles for the 1-0 Tiger lead. Both teams were shutout until the bottom of the eighth, when the Tigers put up three runs. With one out, Harbin doubled. He scored on a opposite field single from Andy D’Alessio. D’Alessio moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Marquez Smith’s double off junior Joey Haug (Holt, Mo./Maple Woods C.C.). The third run came home on a fielder’s choice from D.J. Mitchell, scoring Smith.
Anderson struck out five in six innings, scattering eight hits and allowing only one earned run. P.J. Zocchi, Clemson’s projected Friday starter, pitched the first 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and no runs while striking out three. Daniel Moskos struck out three to earn his second save.
Raber had two of Coastal’s five hits, while Chalk and Smith had three hits apiece for the Tigers.
Coastal will host the Myrtle Beach Hyundai Isuzu Classic March 9-11, welcoming Bethune-Cookman, Ball State and Georgia Southern to Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. Coastal will host Bethune-Cookman Friday at 4 p.m.
