BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Coastal Carolina volleyball team (2-5) lost to host Samford in the final match of the Barber's Bulldog Classic on Sunday, Sept. 2 at Seibert Hall. Game scores were 30-23, 18-30, 33-31, 20-30, 13-15.
"Samford played amazing," Head Coach Kristen Bauer said. "We really needed to win game four to win the match."
With the match tied 1-1, game three was a battle with the largest lead being three when Samford had a 16-13 advantage. However, Coastal closed the gap and 13 ties would occur. After freshman Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) tied the game at 24, the Lady Chanticleers took a 25-24 lead off a Samford attack error. Samford retook the lead off a kill by Sheridan Stangohr to make it a 30-29 game. Coastal responded with a pair of kills from freshman Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) and sophomore Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and then sealed the win with a pair of Bulldog errors.
After trailing by as many as four late in game five, Coastal cuts its deficit down to one on two occasions. However, it would not be enough as Samford got the final points it needed for the five-game win.
Kimes recorded the second double-double of her career with a team-high 19 kills as well as 22 digs. Junior Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) had a match-high 23 digs. Starbuck was also named to the All-Tournament Team after a 31-assist and 52-dig weekend.
The Lady Chants return to action on Friday, Sept. 7 at the Comfort Suites 49ers Volleyball Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. Coastal faces host Charlotte at 7 p.m. at Halton Arena.
