CLEMSON, S.C. –  The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (0-2) fell to 20th-ranked Clemson (2-0) 5-0 Sept. 5 at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.

Clemson scored first at 7:07 as Nuria Zufia received a cross on the left side from Courtney Foster and beat freshman Karen Pavlick (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) to the right corner. Clemson almost made it 2-0 a minute later, but Pavlick made a diving stop on a Foster strike. The Tigers scored their second goal in the 17th minute as Molly Franklin received a pass from Julie Bolt, dribbled 20 yards and shot from 15 yards out for the two-goal advantage. At 33:53, Meghan Smith made it 3-0 Clemson as she received a cross from Samantha Fortier and just tucked in the right corner. Judea Davis also earned an assist on the Tiger goal.

Clemson outshot Coastal 13-2 in the first half, with Lady Chanticleers’ shots coming from seniors Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England)) and Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)). Pavlick had four saves in the first 45 minutes for CCU. For Clemson, Franklin had three shots to pace the Tigers, while Ashley Phillips had two saves in net.

Katie Vogel made it 4-0 Clemson on a shot in the center of the box with assists from Bolt and Foster at 53:22. Redshirt junior Britt Pecora (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Socastee (Presbyterian)) came in to start the second half and made a great save on a Foster shot just three minutes earlier. Three minutes after the goal, Zufia scored her second goal of the game as Pecora got a hand on the shot but it fell in the net. Zufia was assisted by Vogel at 56:38. A Coastal foul in the box gave Clemson a penalty kick at 61:37, but Pecora saved Zufia’s kick and also had a save on a rebound by Foster.

Clemson outshot the Lady Chants 22-3 and had a 5-0 corner-kick advantage. Freshman Lauren Kies (South Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) had Coastal’s shot in the second half.
