More Information:

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (9-4, 5-1 Big South) had its winning streak snapped at nine games as the Chanticleers fell 4-1 to Charleston Southern (8-4-2, 3-1-1 Big South) Oct. 14 at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C. Three Charleston Southern goals in a span of 8:55 was the difference as Coastal Carolina fell to 0-3-2 lifetime at CSU.

In an entertaining first half, Charleston Southern's Brianna Murphy got the Lady Bucs on the board in the third minute, as a Chanticleer turnover led to a breakaway goal. It was Murphy's sixth goal of the season.

Charleston Southern had a chance to take a two-goal lead on a penalty shot at 11:42, but sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) stopped Murphy's shot and then collected the rebound to keep the Lady Bucs off the board. Coastal Carolina had its first scoring opportunity in the 16th minute when sophomore Sara Niles (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) had a look from 10 yards out, but CSU goalkeeper Alyssa Budros made a sprawling save. The Chanticleers did tie it at 16:45 when senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) collected a Lady Buc miscue, duked a CSU defender and deposited a shot in the left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. It was Gunning sixth goal of the season and 31st of her Coastal Carolina career.

Coastal Carolina out-shot Charleston Southern 9-3 in the first 45 minutes and had five corners to the Lady Bucs' one. Haggard had two saves in the half with Budros coming up with three stops. Three Chanticleers had two shots apiece in the first half.

Charleston Southern looked to have the first good opportunity to score in the second half, but Sarah Catenacci's attempt was cleared away by freshman Marissa Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island). Michelle Dennis then had a breakaway 1-on-1 with Haggard, but the Chant goalkeeper made the stop. Emma Mattsson gave the Lady Bucs a 2-1 lead at 52:43, sending an eight-yard shot past Haggard in the left side of the net. Then at 54:27, Catenacci free kick from 15 yards out went in the upper left-hand corner for a 3-1 Lady Buc lead. Charleston Southern put it out of reach at 61:38, when Catenacci headed a pass to Mattsson, who fed it into the right corner of the net for a 4-1 Lady Buc advantage.

Coastal Carolina outshot Charleston Southern 14-8 in the match and had a 6-2 corner-kick advantage. Both goalkeepers had four saves on the night. Five Chants had two shots, while Mattsson led CSU with three shot attempts.

Coastal Carolina returns home Friday, Oct. 17 when the Chanticleers host Big South rival Winthrop. Game time is at 6 p.m.
