Teal Defeats Black 9-6 in Chanticleer World Series
More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University baseball team ended its fall practice with a nine-inning Teal/Black game Sunday, Oct. 19. The Teal team defeated Black 9-6 in the only game after Saturday’s action was rained out. A groundout by redshirt freshman Tucker Frawley (Lexington, S.C./Lexington), scored sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton), putting the Black team up 1-0 after the top of the first. The Teal team answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Both were unearned on an error on a pop up off the bat of junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s), which scored senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) and sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell). A double by sophomore Tom La Stella (Closter, N.J./St. John’s) brought in a pair of runs for Teal in the bottom of the second. Anderson then drove in Woodward with a sacrifice fly in the third, making it 5-1 Teal. Iglesias had the big hit in the fifth inning, as his home run brought in La Stella. Earlier in the inning, La Stella scored junior Casey Gibson (McAlester, Okla./Eastern Oklahoma State College) with a single. The Black team got a run back in the sixth on a run-scoring single from freshman Taylor Motter (North Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens). The Teal team answered in the bottom of the frame as Anderson homered with two out, making it 9-2 Teal. In the top of the seventh, Noel was hit by a pitch and senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) singled with one out. After redshirt freshman Keith Hessler (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) got a strike out, he walked Motter. Frawley would score a pair as his fly ball was misplayed in the outfield. Redshirt sophomore Keith Hardwick (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest) then singled in Motter and redshirt sophomore Dustin King (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest) brought in Frawley with a single, but that would be the closest the Black team would get. Sophomore Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) eanred the win on the mound, going four innings and allowing two hits and one run while striking out three. Junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) picked up the save, pitching the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out a pair. Black starter redshirt junior Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) struck out two in two innings of work. Anderson and La Stella had two hits apiece for the Teal, while Bortnick and Hardwick had two safties for the Black.
