CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (3-6) used a perfect 8-of-8 shooting night from junior Mario Edwards (Massillon, Ohio/Chipola J.C.) and 45 points from its bench to defeat UVa-Wise 90-51 Dec. 14 in Conway, S.C. Coastal Carolina recorded its second straight 30-plus winning margin in as many days against the Highland Cavaliers. Unlike the Southern Virginia game 27 hours prior, the Chanticleers got off to a hot start, taking a 13-0 lead and never looking back. Redshirt junior Logan Johnson’s (Knoxville, Tenn./South Doyle) layup at 16:51 gave Coastal Carolina the 13-0 advantage. Coastal Carolina got the lead to 27-7 at 11:48 on a three from Edwards, one of six on the night. Coastal Carolina’s pressure forced UVa-Wise into 12 first-half turnovers and the Chanticleers had as much as a 27-point first half lead, the latest on a tip-in from redshirt freshman Jon Pack (Dallas, Ga./East Paulding) with 1:16 left. The Chanticleers also had 13 assists to seven turnovers in the first 20 minutes. The Chanticleers shot 48.6 percent in the second half and were able to get all 12 players that dressed into the game. Edwards continued his hot hand, making three more three-pointers and connecting on all eight shots in the game for a career high 23 points. Pack also had a career high with 15 points on 6-of-7 from the field. Senior Mario Sisinni (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) had a career high eight assists as the Chants had 25 assists on the night, compared to just 10 turnovers. Coastal Carolina also had eight blocked shots, which is a season high. Harris led the Chants with eight rebounds, while Edwards had seven boards and three assists. UVA-Wise was led by Adam Hood’s 18 points. Kevin Perry added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The game was an exhibition contest for the Highland Cavaliers. Coastal Carolina shot over 50 percent for the second straight game, shooting 53.2 percent from the field. The Chants also outrebounded UVa-Wise 43-33. Coastal Carolina heads down I-17 to Charleston, S.C., to face the College of Charleston Wednesday, Dec. 17. Tipoff at the brand-new Carolina First Center is at 7 p.m.
