Men's Basketball Knocks Off East Carolina, 63-55

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (5-7) built a 15-point first-half lead and went 21-of-29 from the free-throw line in defeating East Carolina (8-4) 63-55 Dec. 28 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The Chanticleers have now won two games in a row and defeated the Pirates for the second time in school history. Coastal Carolina opened the game with jumpers from senior Steven Sexton (Monticello, Ky./Wayne County) and redshirt junior Logan Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn./South Doyle), but the Pirates answered with four points to tie the contest. Coastal Carolina went on another 4-0 run, this time capped by a layup from Sexton at 15:33. Freshman Dexter Moore (Bluefield, W. Va./Hargrave Military) hit a three at 14:53 for an 11-4 Chant advantage. After a three from ECU’s James Legan at 14:39, redshirt junior Joseph Harris (Lejeune, N.C./Lejeune) stuck back redshirt freshman Jon Pack’s (Dallas, Ga./East Paulding) shot to give the Chants a 13-7 lead. Sophomore Anthony Breeze (Greenville, S.C./Greenville) came in and hit a jumper at 12:20, giving Coastal Carolina a 15-10 advantage. The Chants then went on a 12-2 run over the next 6:50. A fastbreak layup from junior Mario Edwards (Massillon, Ohio/Chipola J.C.) made it 19-10 at 10:37, forcing the Pirates to call a time out. Coastal Carolina had as much as a 15-point first half lead at 5:30 on a monster dunk by Breeze, giving the Chants a 27-12 advantage. East Carolina went more than 11 minutes without a field goal, as a Darrius Morrow jumper at 2:13 ended the drought. A jumper by Harris at 1:09 gave the Chants the 31-17 halftime advantage. Harris led the Chants with eight first-half points, going a perfect 3-of-3 from the field. Breeze added six and five rebounds while seven Chants were in the scorebook in the first 20 minutes. Coastal Carolina shot 42.9 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Pirates 18-16. The Pirates were led by Brock Young, who had five points. East Carolina shot just 23.8 percent from the floor and had 11 turnovers. After a Pack layup at 19:08 gave the Chants a 16-points advantage, East Carolina went on an 8-0 run to trim the lead to 33-25. Legan made 2-of-3 free throws to cap that run at 16:23. The Pirates would then go on another 6-0 run as a Young layup at 13:20 cut the lead to 35-31. A Young steal and layup gave the Chants just a three-point advantage, but a Harris layup stopped the run at 12:22. Sam Hinnant hit a three at 11:41, trimming the Chant lead to two.
