Men's Tennis Falls to No. 71 Tennessee Tech

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team fell to No. 71 Tennessee Tech 5-2 Friday, Feb. 15 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
The Chanticleers (4-4) won the doubles point by getting wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) posted an 8-3 win over Tiago Gilioli and Juan Pablo Gomez at No.1 doubles. Meanwhile, senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas) defeated Dean O'Brien and Giovanni Vaglietti 9-7 in the No. 2 slot. At No. 3 doubles, Tennessee Tech's Borja Zarco and James Crawford defeated junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) 8-5.
Howver, in singles competition, the Golden Eagles (6-0) came away with five wins. Withers was the only Chant with a win in singles play as he topped Mario Guitierrez 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 in the No. 6 slot. Zarco defeated Vlaskin in No. 1 singles (6-2, 7-5), while Gilioli earned a win at No. 2 singles after Ramos retired. O'Brien defeated Tzvetkov 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot and Gomez had a 6-4, 6-2 win over junior Christopher Ross-da Silva (Estoril, Portugal/ADLC Online) in No. 4 singles. Vaglietti won at No. 5 singles, defeating freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilia, Brazil/Galois) 6-3, 7-6.
Coastal returns to action on Sunday when the Chants open Big South Conference action against defending league champion Radford. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the City of Myrtle Beach Tennis Center.
