WILMINGTON, N.C. – The 18th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (15-4) lost its second straight game in a 5-2 loss to UNC Wilmington (14-4) March 19 at Brooks Field. A first-inning grand slam gave the Seahawks a lead they would never relinquish in winning their 13th straight game.   Coastal fell behind for the second straight game in the first inning. Rhett Miller opened the inning with a walk. Daniel Hargrave singled him to second. The bases were loaded when Jason Appel laid down a bunt single and Mark Carver quickly cleared them with a grand slam over the fence in left field.   Coastal cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the third. Sophomore Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) drew a walk to lead off the inning. With one out, junior David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Southern Alamance) singled to left field. Junior Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) made it first and third with two outs on a fielder’s choice and sophomore Adam Rice (Murphy, Texas/Elgin C.C.) brought Gilmore in with a single to center. Junior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) belted his first home run of the season, a lined shot to left, to cut the Seahawk lead to 4-2 in the fourth.    UNCW scored a run without a hit in the seventh. Alex Hill was hit on junior Jeff Richard’s (West Bloomfield, Mich./Central Michigan) first pitch of the inning. Jes Snyder sacrificed Hill to second and Mike Rooney reached another CCU hit batsman. The Seahawks loaded the bases as Miller walked. Daniel Hargrave grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Appel walked to force in a run.   Senior Joey Haug (Holt, Mo./Maple Woods C.C.) did not allow a hit in 3.1 innings pitched.  He struck out three Seahawks in lowering his earned-run-average to 1.77. Witten took the loss for the Chants. He allowed four hits and four runs in 2.2 innings. Allen Flood earned the win in relief for UNCW. He struck out two and gave up three hits and one run in three innings of work.   Anderson had two hits on the day for Coastal. For UNCW, Appel had two hits, while Carver drove in four runs with the home run.   Coastal opens a three-game series with Albany Friday, March 21 at 6 p.m., in Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
