Softball Falls to Stony Brook, 4-0 More Information:
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- Coastal Carolina's softball team lost its final game of the Jacksonville University Softball Tournament Sunday, March 1, falling to Stony Brook 4-0.
The Seawolves scored one run in both the first and second innings. In the first, Ashley Westphal had a lead-off single. After Vicki Kavitsky popped up to third, Westphal advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Kelsi Fanelli double scored Westphal and gave Stony Brook the 1-0 lead. In the second, Molly Kestranek had a singled through the left side and then moved to second off a sacrifice bunt by Kelly Oberto. Kestranek moved to third as Jade Clare grounded out. A Sara Cerrone double to left field drove in Kestranek as the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead.
Stony Brook's final two runs came in the fifth inning. After Westphal flied out to right field, the Seawolves took advantage of three straight Lady Chanticleer errors. Kavitsky reached first and then moved to third when Fanelli reached on an error. Fanelli stole second and Kavitsky scored on CCU's final error of the inning to make it a 3-0 Stony Brook game. Marissa Fleury hit an RBI single to center field that scored Fanelli to give Stony Brook the 4-0 lead, which would ultimately be the final score.
Colleen Mathes earned the win for the Seawolves after six innings, giving up just five hits and striking out four batters. Alyssa Struzenberg had the save after pitching the seventh inning. Freshman Ashley Pedersen (Fayetteville, Ga./Whitewater) pitched six innings en route to receiving the loss. Pedersen gave up four runs, two of which were earned, off eight hits.
Following the final game on Sunday, the All-Tournament Team was announced. Junior Verity Long-Droppert (Claremont, Australia/Shenton (Western Australia)) was selected to the team after batting .375 and going 6-for-16 from the plate. Long-Droppert scored two runs and had a double in the first game against North Florida and an RBI against Virginia.
Coastal returns to action Tuesday, March 5 with a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the CCU Softball Field.
