Softball Drops Both Games to Georgia Tech

More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's softball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Saturday, March 22 as the Lady Chanticleers lost both games in their doubleheader against Georgia Tech. Coastal fell 2-1 in the first game and then lost 10-2 in five innings in the second.

In the first game, Georgia Tech scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings in order to take a 2-0 lead. Savannah Brown gave Georgia Tech the 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Brown reached base on a walk and then advanced to second as Whitney Haller was hit by a pitch. She moved to third on a Haller sacrifice bunt. With no one on first and one out, Jessica Weaver hit into a fielder's choice as Coastal unsuccessfully tried to get Brown out at home. In the fifth inning and with one out, Aileen Morales singled to center field and then reached second on a Christy Jones groundout to sophomore Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South). Blair Shimandle hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Morales and gave the Yellow Jackets their two-run lead.

Coastal began to rally in the seventh inning, cutting Georgia Tech's lead down to one. As Irwin reached base and advanced to second on a Yellow Jacket error, sophomore Laicole Walker (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate School) singled to left center, which moved Irwin to third. An Ashley Pisone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) sacrifice bunt allowed Walker to advanced to second and kept Irwin at third. Then with two outs, junior Kelsey Riffel  singled to center field that moved Walker to third and drove in Irwin to make it a 2-1 game. Unfortunately for Coastal, its rally came up short as sophomore Alyssa Tornatore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), with a full count, fouled out to Brown at catcher.

Whitney Humphreys pitched the complete game en route to receiving the win. She allowed four hits and only one unearned run was scored while she was in the pitching circle. Freshman Ashley Pedersen (Fayetteville, Ga./Whitewater) had the loss after allowing two runs off six hits in seven innings of work.

In game two, Georgia Tech scored runs in all five innings. After Morales scored in the first inning, Weaver hit a solo home run in the second inning to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech pushed its lead to five with a three-run, one-out blast from Brown in the third inning.

Coastal trimmed Georgia Tech's lead down to three as junior Verity Long-Droppert hit her third home run of the season. With two outs, junior Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) singled through the left side. Long-Droppert hit her bomb to center field to make it a 5-2 game.

However, that would be as close as Coastal could get as Georgia Tech used a Morales grand slam in the fourth and a Whitney Haller run in the fifth to take an eight-run lead through five innings.

Emily Schreck had the win after giving up two runs off five hits in five innings. Sophomore Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Paxtuent) pitched 3.1 innings for the loss, allowing nine runs off eight hits.

Coastal Carolina returns to action Wednesday, March 26 with a doubleheader against UNC Wilmington. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4 p.m.
