Women's Tennis Drops Match at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis team fell to Charlotte 6-1 on Thursday March 28 at the Phillips Tennis Complex in Charlotte, N.C.
In doubles competition, sophomore Kim Webb (Usk, Wales/Millfield) and senior Sofie Ahlberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Adalsskolan) earned an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 slot over Koren Fleming and Candace Cunningham, but the 49ers took the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Ana Spivakovsky and Yudeshnee Pillay defeated senior Amy Pazahanick (Canton, Ga./Brookwood (Georgia Southern)) and sophomore Maria Camberos (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Lomar del Real) 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Kimber Redfern and Gabi Vergara got the win over junior Tina Petkova (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/St.Ignatius (Toronto)) and freshman Fernanda Shalders (Victoria-Es, Brazil/Centro Estadual Educado Jovense Adultos De Vitoria) 8-4 in the No. 3 spot.
The Lady Chanticleers lone point of the match came from Ahlberg in the No. 4 singles position with 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory over Candace Cunningham. Spivakovsky defeated Pazahanick 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 slot and Pillay beat Webb 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Fleming had a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Petkova in the No. 3 slot and in No. 5 singles, Redfern took a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Camberos. Vergara topped Shalders 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot.
The Lady Chants will take to their home courts at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center this weekend beginning Saturday March 29 as they take on West Virginia at 11 a.m. The team will finish against Big South opponent Radford at 1 p.m. Sunday March 30.
