Women's Tennis Takes on UNC Asheville on Sunday

WOMEN’S TENNIS HOSTS UNC ASHEVILLE SUNDAY: The Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis team looks to bounce back after a Big South Conference-opener defeat when it travels to UNC Asheville to take on the Lady Bulldogs Sunday, March 9 at noon.
SCOUTING THIS WEEK’S OPPONENT: UNC Asheville (3-3) picked up its third shutout of the season March 1 with a 7-0 victory over Winston-Salem State. The Lady Bulldogs swept the doubles competition and had three perfect games in singles contests at the No.3, No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Prior to taking on the Lady Chanticleers, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Greenville, N.C. to play East Carolina Wednesday, March 5 and to Greensboro, N.C. where they will see action against UNC Greensboro Friday, March 7.
WE'RE NUMBER ONE: The doubles team of freshman Lexi Bolesky and senior Amy Pazahanick are 7-1 on the season at No. 1 doubles. This includes a perfect match in the win over Campbell University Feb. 9, with an 8-0 victory over Scarlett Alfonzo and Cristina Garcia.
SOFIE'S STREAK TO SEVEN: With a win over Liberty’s Hannah Fick Feb. 24, senior Sofie Ahlberg has extended her winning streak to seven in singles play. Ahlberg holds a 4-1 record at No. 4 singles, a solid 2-0 record at No. 5 singles and is 1-0 in the No, 6 slot.
AMY ALSO AWESOME: Senior Amy Pazahanick defeated Martyna Hanusz of Liberty 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to pick up her seventh overall win in singles play this season. Pazahanick is now 7-1 at the No. 2 singles slot. She joins classmate Sofie Ahlberg as the only Lady Chanticleers with seven wins on the season.
COASTAL SELECTED SECOND IN PRESEASON POLL: CCU was selected to finish second in the annual Big South Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. The defending league champion Lady Chanticleers received 78 points and four first-place votes in the poll. Winthrop was tabbed as the preseason favorite with 93 points, receiving nine first-place votes.
DEFENDING THE BIG SOUTH TITLE: Coastal knocked off the defending five-time Big South Tournament Champion Winthrop in a thrilling 4-3 decision to capture the second conference championship in CCU history. With the victory, the Lady Chants qualified for the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Clemson, 4-0, in the opening round.
20/20 VISION: With its 20-6 overall record, CCU reached the 20-win plateau for the second consecutive season. Coastal posted a 22-4 record in the spring of 2006. Since the turn of the century, the Lady Chants have posted an amazing 143-38 (.790) record.
HEAD COACH JODY DAVIS: Head Coach Jody Davis enters his 12th season as the CCU mentor. While at the helm, Davis has led Coastal to a 176-64 (.733) overall record and a 77-25 (.755) mark in the Big South Conference. A four-time Big South Coach of the Year honoree, Davis has guided CCU to two league championships.
SHE’S NOT KIDDING AROUND: The most prolific women’s tennis player in school history, Emma Kidd, was inducted into CCU’s Sasser Athletic Hall of Fame, Oct. 19, 2007. Kidd is the first women’s tennis player to receive the honor.
Producing the most illustrious career in the history of Coastal’s women’s tennis program, Kidd (1998-02) set and still holds school records for singles victories (114) and ranks second in doubles victories (92), while becoming the only female in Big South Conference history, in any sport, to win the league’s Player of the Year award four times.
