th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (37-9) had six extra-base hits and scored six runs in the second inning as the Chanticleers defeated The Citadel (23-21) April 30 in Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. Sophomore
Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) gave CCU a strong starting outing on the mound, going six innings and allowing just four hits and a run. The Citadel struck first in the first. Chris Swauger led off the game with a double, his 300
th career hit. He moved to third on a flyout from Matt Arnold and scored on a Sonny Meade single up the middle. Coastal started the second with a groundout, but would score six runs off of four hits in the inning. Senior

Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor). Sophomore

David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) brought everyone home with his ninth home run of the season. Coastal added two in the fourth. Sappelt doubled to right center to open the frame. Woodward bunted Sappelt over to third and was safe on a throwing error from Arnold. Woodward would steal second and junior
Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) brought in both runners with a single off the pitcher’s leg. Coastal ended the scoring in the sixth as sophomore
Adam Rice (Murphy, Texas/Elgin C.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Anderson. Fleet retired 14 Bulldogs in a row in recording his fourth win of the season. He struck out three and walked a batter. Three Coastal relievers each threw an inning, striking out five on the night. The loss went to The Citadel’s Chris McGuiness. He gave up five runs in 1.2 innings. The Bulldogs used seven pitchers on the night. Sappelt and Anderson had three hits apiece for Coastal, while Anderson and Doyle drove in a pair of runs. For the Bulldogs, Swauger and Meade had two hits apiece. Coastal steps out-of-conference for a three-game series at Georgia Tech May 2-4.
