Baseball Signs Cuevas to a National Letter-of-Intent
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University baseball team and Head Coach Gary Gilmore have announced the signing of Caleb Cuevas (Fletcher, N.C./West Henderson (Louisburg J.C.)) to a National Letter-of-Intent. Cuevas becomes the eighth student-athlete to sign with Coastal baseball for the 2008-09 academic year. Cuevas, a righthanded pitcher, was a First Team All-Region IX Team member at Louisburg Junior College in Louisburg, N.C. He struck out 40 batters in 31 innings, going 5-1 with a 3.48 earned-run average in 2008 for the Hurricanes. Cuevas also was a First Team All-Region IX Tournament member and was on the Dean’s List in the spring of 2008. Cuevas went to West Henderson High School in Hendersonville, N.C., where he was a two-time All-Western Athletic Conference selection for the Falcons. Cuevas was a Puma All-American as well as a top prospect by both Baseball America and Team One. Cuevas was the Most Valuable Player of the Hawaiian Collegiate Baseball League in 2007, leading the league in both ERA and strikeouts. Cuevas joins Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby), Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville), Brad Goldberg (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood), Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West), Taylor Motter (North Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens), TJ Swank (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard, Md./Riverdale Baptist) in the 2008-09 class. Coastal ended the season tying a school record with 50 wins and advancing to its first-ever Super Regional. The Chants won the Big South regular-season and tournament titles, had 11 players on the All-Big South teams and went 3-0 at the NCAA Conway Regional.
