Baseball End-of-Year Notes
The Coastal Carolina University baseball team earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2008 and while the Chanticleers came up short in the series against North Carolina, the team had a magical that led to a regional at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field, another Big South sweep of the regular-season and tournament title and a 50-win season for the third time in the last four years. SAPPELT BREAKS DOUBLES MARK: With a double in the seventh inning June 8 against North Carolina, junior David Sappelt (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) set the school’s single-season doubles mark with 25. He broke Justin Owens’ record of 24 doubles, set in 2002. Sappelt ends his Coastal career with 45 doubles, 11 triples and 33 home runs. WOODWARD BREAKS ON-BASE RECORD: Freshman Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) ended the 2008 season with a .540 on-base percentage, which is tops in Coastal history for a single season. He broke Mike Costanzo’s record of .525 set in 2005. Woodward had 82 hits, 58 walks and 30 hit-by-pitches in 2008. The hit-by-pitch mark is a Big South record, while his walks mark is third all-time in the conference. HAUG SETS ERA RECORD: Senior Joey Haug (Holt, Mo./Maple Woods C.C.) set the single-season and career record for earned-run average at Coastal in Division I. Haug’s 2.28 ERA broke the record of 2.49 by Scott Sturkie in 1999. His 2.54 career ERA beat Paul Alexander’s 2.55 career mark. DOYLE, WOODWARD EARN NATIONAL HONORS: Junior Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) and freshman Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) both earned national honors this past week. Doyle was named to the All-Ping! Baseball Second Team as a catcher, while Woodward was a Third Team selection and a Ping! Baseball All-Freshman selection. Woodward also was a Second Team All-Freshman selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. COASTAL DRAFT UPDATE: Coastal had five players selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, including two players chosen in the fifth round. Junior Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) and classmate Pete Andrelczyk (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) were selected by the New York Mets and the Florida Marlins, respectively. Junior David Sappelt (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) was picked in the ninth round by the Cincinnati Reds. Senior Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) was selected by the New York Yankees in the 33rd round, with junior Jeff Richard (West Bloomfield, Mich./Central Michigan) picked by the Atlanta Braves in the 38th round. Coastal has had 12 players selected in the draft the past two seasons.
