Men's Golf Wraps Up Quality Weekend of Competition

Sophomore-to-be and Big South Player and Freshman of the Year Tripp McAllister captured the South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship, while redshirt senior Zack Byrd finished as runner-up at the North Carolina Amateur. CCU Alum Dustin Johnson tied for 48th at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego, Calif., June 15.
McAllister birdied the final hole for his only lead of the match to defeat former USC golfer Brent Roof of Columbia 1-up at Spring Valley Country Club in Columbia. Roof led by as many as 2-up during the match and as late as the 15th hole. However, McAllister captured the last three holes, including draining a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for the victory. This was the first time in the match play portion that McAllister had played past the 15th hole.
Byrd finished one shot behind 18-year old Jack Fields of Southern Pines, who fired a course record 8-under 63 in the final round to finish at 1-under 283, one shot ahead of the Coastal Carolina redshirt senior. Byrd shot even-par 284 (70-69-75-70) in the 72-hole tournament, hosted at the Raleigh Country Club in Raleigh, N.C.
In his first U.S. Open that he qualified for through sectionals, Johnson tied for 48th after final round 2-over 73 (same score as Tiger Woods). During the four-day, 72-hole tournament, Johnson did not break par in any single round, but was also never above 75, going 74-72-75-73 to finish at 10-over 294.
