Baseball Summer League Wrap-Up

With classes starting at Coastal Carolina on August 20, it means that play in the various collegiate summer leagues has ended. Let's take a look at how the Chanticleers did over the summer.
ALASKA
Dan Lombardozzi (Herndon, Va./Herndon) made 16 appearances for the Peninsula Oilers, pitching 23.1 innings and allowing five earned runs for a 1.93 ERA. Lombardozzi struck out 18 batters while giving up 17 hits.
CAL RIPKEN, SR. LEAGUE
Keith Hessler (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) made seven starts for the Herndon Braves. He had a 3.86 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched. Paul Rodriguez (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest) was 4-2 in 10 apprearances for the Braves.
CALIFORNIA COLLEGIATE
Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) helped Santa Barbara to a league title. He went 3-0 on the season, including a six-inning, five-strikeout performance against the MLB Urban Youth Academy July 27.
CAPE COD
Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) went 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA in nine appearances for Bourne. He was named to the Cape Cody All-League Team for his efforts. In 50 innings, McCully struck out 44 batters while allowing only 11 earned runs.
COASTAL PLAIN
Kent Altman (Conway, S.C./Conway) was 5-0 with a 0.92 ERA for the Florence Redwolves. He had 38 strikeouts and allowed just five earned runs in 49 innings. He also was named to the the Coastal Plain All-Star Game July 22 in Asheboro, N.C. … Coastal Carolina had three players on the Columbia Blowfish. Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) hit .278 with seven doubles and 16 RBI in 39 games... Rich Witten (Danville, Ky./Danville) had 15 hits and six RBI in 20 games. David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) hit .254 with three home runs and 21 RBI in 38 games… Caleb Cuevas (Fletcher, N.C./Louisburg J.C.) was 1-2 with a 2.08 ERA for the Outer Banks Daredevils. He has 24 strikeouts and only nine walks in 30.1 innings pitched… Coastal Carolina also had three players on the Peninsula Pilots. Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) had five hits, including a double, in 10 games for the Pilots. Adam Rice (Murphy, Texas/Elgin C.C.) hit .232 with 12 RBI in 29 games, while Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) hit .252 with 15 runs and 19 RBI in 29 games… Jeff Richard (West Bloomfield, Mich./Central Michigan) made 10 appearances for Martinsville, allowing 15 hits in 18.2 innings while picking up a save.
VALLEY
Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) led Covington with a .344 batting average and had 10 doubles, a triple, a home run and 16 RBI in 34 games for the Lumberjacks. Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) hit .283 with two doubles and seven RBI in 18 games… Jim Birmingham (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) went 2-3 in seven starts for New Market. He had 35 strikeouts in 35 innings pitched.
