DURHAM, N.C. - Tenth-ranked Duke (1-0) defeated the Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (0-2) 9-0 Aug. 24 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Duke connected on six of its 11 shot attempts in the first half, starting with an Elisabeth Redmond goal at the 5:25 mark. She was assisted by Kelly McCann and Marybeth Kreger. In the 15^th minute, Ashley Rape scored on a header on a corner kick from Jane Alukonis. Duke would score again in the 19^th minute, as KayAnne Gummersall strike beat sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) with assists from Cody Newman and Christine McDonald. Gummersall scored again in the 23^rd minute with assists from Kreger and Alukonis. Rape connected on another header from a corner in the 29^th minute. The Blue Devils ended their first-half scoring in the 42^nd minute on Kelly Hathorn's first goal of the season from Lynnea Pappas.

Duke outshot Coastal Carolina 11-2, with seniors Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) and Danielle DeSonia (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) connecting on shots for the Chanticleers. Haggard had one save for the Chanticleers, while Duke's Cassidy Powers also had a save in goal. Duke also had all five corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.

Duke countered with three goals in the second half. Newman scored in the 55^th minute from Chelsea Canepa. An unassisted goal by Kreger in the 65^th minute made it 8-0 and Pappas ended the scoring in the 80^th minute on assists from Meaghan FitzGerald and Carey Goodman.

Duke out-shot Coastal Carolina 23-4 and had 13 shots on goal compared to two for the Chanticleers. McColl had two shots to lead Coastal Carolina while Newman had four for Duke. Sophomore Karen Pavlick (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) had three saves in the second half for Coastal Carolina. The nine goals allowed were the most by a Chanticleer team in school history. Coastal Carolina gave up seven at UNC Greensboro Sept. 12, 2004.

Coastal Carolina travels to Greenville, S.C., for the Select Kickoff Classic on the campus of Furman University. The Chanticleers will face host Furman Friday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m.
