Women's Cross Country Wins Big South Preview More Information:
LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Coastal Carolina University women’s cross country team took first place in the Big South Invitational this morning, Sat., Sept. 20 at Liberty.
The Chanticleers featured five to the top 11 finishers, and were led by freshman Christian Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) who took fourth place with a time of 19:33.30. Sophomore Maranie Staab (Trafford, Pa./Penn Trafford) took sixth place, clocking a time of 19:37.60. Staab was followed by Shelby Donahue (Griswold, Conn./Griswold)in eighth place (19:51.00), Theresa Schamberger (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble) in ninth (19:54.90) and reigning Big South Runner of the Week Mia Wyszynski (Berlin, Germany/Wilma Rudolph (University of Bremen) in 11th (19.59.90).
“This was an outstanding race for us, and I am very pleased,” stated a victorious Head Coach Alan Connie. “The course was very hilly, and was a very difficult run for the girls. This race will be very helpful when the conference championship portion of our season rolls around.”
The Chants entered the race as the No. 12 team in the latest USTFCCCA Regional Poll, while Liberty, who finished second with 45 team points, entered as the No. 9 team in the same poll.
Coastal Carolina will next be in action on Fri., Oct. 3 as it travels to the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
