Volleyball Upends Idaho State, Edged Out By Cal State Bakersfield

WICHITA, Kan. - A 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) sweep of the Idaho State Bengals highlighted the day for the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team, before dropping a 3-1 (25-21, 11-25, 16-25, 19-25) decision to Cal State Bakersfield in its final match of the Wichita State Best Western Shocker Classic Sept. 6, at Charles Koch Arena. Sophomore Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) hit .714 for 11 kills against the Bengals, while sophomore Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) had a match-high 13 kills. The teams played to a 5-5 draw before the Bengals grabbed the next four points, forcing the Chanticleers to call a timeout to regroup in the first set. Coastal Carolina put together six of the next eight points to even the game back at 11-11. Three kills by Kimes wrapped up the first set, 25-20 for the Chanticleers. Trading points was the story again from the start in the second set, with the score tied at 16-16. Three errors by the Bengals gave the Chanticleers a 19-16 edge, and they did not relinquish it, closing out the frame 25-20. A kill by junior Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) put the Chants up 11-8 in the third set. Kimes added three kills and Amanda Russell (Liberty, Ind./Union County) drove one home to stretch the lead to 19-12. Match point came in favor of the Chanticleers as a block by Kimes and Nyhof sealed the 25-19 victory for the Chants. In the second match of the day, Coastal Carolina and Cal State Bakersfield played point for point to a 20-20 deadlock in the first set. Three kills by Russell alongside one kill from Nyhof and senior Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Andover Central) earned the Chants a 25-21 win in the first set. Coastal Carolina found themselves behind early in the second set as the Roadrunners charged out to a 9-2 advantage. A seven-point rally by the Roadrunners put the set out of reach for the Chanticleers, as they fell 25-11 in the second frame. The Chanticleers were down 9-8 in the third set, but the Roadrunners would rally again to pull ahead 18-11. With the momentum swinging their way, CSUB took the third set 25-16. In the final set of the match, Coastal Carolina was down 18-13, but five attacking errors by the Roadrunners opened the door for the Chanticleers tying the game at 18-18 off a block by Bickford and freshman Kelsie Mauck (Muncie, Ind./Delta). CSUB tallied seven of the next eight points to take the set and the match 25-19. Kimes posted 11 kills and sophomore Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) registered 18 digs in the final match of the tournament. Coastal Carolina will open its home schedule Sept. 12 when it hosts the Courtyard by Marriott Chanticleer Invitational. The Chants will face Georgia State at 6 p.m.
