Women's Soccer Shuts Out VMI 3-0

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (3-10-1, 1-2 Big South) earned its first home and Big South Conference victory of the season in a 3-0 win over VMI (4-7, 2-1 Big South) on a hot and windy day in Conway, S.C., Oct. 10.

The Chanticleers scored twice in the first 18 minutes on their way its eighth consecutive victory over the Keydets. Coastal Carolina had nine shots in the first half, eight on frame, in taking a 2-0 halftime lead. Senior Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) picked up a failed VMI clear and connected in the upper half of the goal from about 25 yards out at 8:46. It was Hellberg's first goal of the season and second career game-winning goal. At 17:08, Coastal Carolina scored on a corner kick. Junior Sara Niles (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) crossed the corner to senior Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), who fed senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) for her fifth goal of the season.

The Chants outshot VMI 9-1 in the first half and had all five corner kicks. Junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) did not have to face a shot in the first 45 minutes, while Angela Redmond had six saves for the Keydets.

Coastal Carolina added insurance at 55:23 as Gentile scored on an assist from junior Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison). It was Gentile's second multi-goal game of the season.

Coastal Carolina finished the game with a 17-2 shot advantage. Gentile and senior Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Loyola (Ill.)) had three shots apiece. For VMI, Chrissy Beach had both shot attempts. T

he Chanticleers had a 9-4 corner-kick advantage. Haggard stopped a shot in the second half for her 15th career shutout and the second for the Chanticleers in the 2009 season. Heidi Beemer played the second half in goal for VMI and had four saves.

Coastal Carolina will host Radford Monday, Oct. 12 at 5 p.m., while VMI is at Charleston Southern the same day at 3 p.m.
