CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (4-10-1, 2-2 Big South) fought through the rainy conditions in Conway, S.C., for a 1-0 win over Radford (6-7, 3-1 Big South) Oct. 12 in a Big South Conference matchup.
A downpour greeted the two teams for most of the game, but both teams had chances to score in the first half. Senior Dana Gentile's (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) shot at 21:19 was just wide. For Radford, Justine Dugger's shot at 26:41 just missed frame. The Chanticleers outshot Radford 7-3 in the first half and had all five corner kicks. Radford's Lisa Lubke had five saves in the first 45 minutes, while junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) stopped one shot.
Coastal Carolina broke through with a goal at 48:54 as junior Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) made a great move on a Radford defender and fed sophomore Marissa Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island). Terry's shot was saved by Luke, but Gentile poked her shot passed the Radford goalie for her seventh of the season and second game-winner. Radford's best chance came at 66:27 when Justine Dugger hit the crossbar on a long shot. SharDavia Bell's shot at 53:33 also was just wide left.
The Chanticleers outshot Radford 12-9 I for the game, as Haggard recorded her second consecutive shutout and 16th of her career, which is a school record, passing Candice Doten's 15.5 career shutouts, making two saves. Lubke ended the game with seven saves. Senior Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Loyola (Ill.)) led the team with three shots, while Dugger had five shots for the Highlanders.
Coastal Carolina visits Clinton, S.C., and Presbyterian Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Radford hosts Winthrop the same day at 7 p.m.
