The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (5-10-2, 3-2-1 Big South) has the first of its final three home games of the season this Friday, Oct. 23 against in-state rival Charleston Southern (11-4-1, 4-1-1 Big South). The game will start at 6 p.m., at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. The Chanticleers currently are in fourth place in the Big South standings after a 2-0 win at UNC Asheville Sunday afternoon.
SCOUTING CHARLESTON SOUTHERN: Charleston Southern currently is tied for second place in the Big South after defeating Presbyterian 3-2 Oct. 18. Marky Boyce had a hat trick for the Lady Bucs and was named Big South Player of the Week Oct. 20. Boyce has 12 goals on the season, while Sarah Catenacci has seven.
SERIES VS. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN: Charleston Southern owns a 6-2-3 series advantage on Coastal Carolina and has won the last four meetings, including the 4-0 win last season at Blackbaud Stadium. The last win for the Chanticleers came at home in a 6-2 win Oct. 5, 2005.
GENTILE ON SCORING STREAK: Senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) has scored a goal in each of the last four games, including scoring the game-winner in the 2-0 victory over UNC Asheville Oct. 18. Gentile leads the team with nine goals scored and has three game-winning goals in 2009.
TUPY SCORES A PAIR ON THE WEEKEND: Junior Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) had a goal apiece in games against Presbyterian and UNC Asheville Oct. 16 and 18. Tupy also had an assist in the 2-2 tie against Presbyterian, which is her third of the season. Tupy is second in goals (4) and points (11) for the Chants this season.
CHANTS GET ALL THE WEATHER: Coastal Carolina has played in four different kinds of weather the past four games. The Chants played in 90-degree heat in the 3-0 win over VMI Oct. 10. A downpour greeted Coastal in its 1-0 win against Radford Oct. 12. Then in the 2-2 tie against Presbyterian Oct. 16, dense fog blanketed the field through most of the game. Finally, Coastal Carolina played in cold and windy conditions in its 2-0 win over UNC Asheville Oct. 18. The forecast for the Charleston Southern game Friday night is cloudy with a temperature in the lower 70's.
DEFENSE COMING UP STRONG IN LAST EIGHT: After not posting a shutout in the first nine games, Coastal Carolina's defense has pitched four shutouts in the last eight games, including a 2-0 shutout of UNC Asheville Oct. 18. Junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) has three shutouts and a 1.40 goals-against average on the season while the team has a 0.83 GAA in the last eight contests.
GENTILE EARNS BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR THE SECOND TIME: Senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) has been named Big South Player of the Week for the second time this season Oct. 14 after scoring three goals in two games in wins over VMI (3-0) and Radford (1-0). Gentile scored the game-winner against the Highlanders and had two goals in the win over Keydets. Gentile now has nine goals on the season.
HAGGARD BREAKS SHUTOUT RECORD: Junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) recorded her 16th career shutout in the 1-0 victory over Radford Oct. 12. That shutout broke the career shutout record at Coastal Carolina, which was set by Candice Doten from 2000-03. Haggard has a career 1.15 goals-against average and 28 wins in her three-year career.
CHANTS BEAT UNBEATENS: VMI and Radford were a combined 5-0 in conference when they faced Coastal Carolina Oct. 10 and 12, both both were dealt their first blemishes of the Big South campaign, as the Chants defeated VMI 3-0 and Radford 1-0. Senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) had three of the four goals, while junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) had two shutouts in the wins.
HELLBERG BREAKS CAREER GAME STARTED RECORD vs. RADFORD: Senior Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) started in her 76th game in a Chanticleer uniform Oct. 12 against Radford, breaking Blair Monroe's record of 75 starts. Hellberg also is tied for second in career games played, as her 78 games played trails Blair Monroe's 82 matches as a Chanticleer.
HELLBERG SCORES GAME-WINNER AGAINST VMI: Senior Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) scored the game-winning goal, the second of her career, in Coastal Carolina's 3-0 win over VMI Oct. 10. Hellberg's fourth career goal was a 25-yard shot in the ninth minute.
PAVLICK, GENTILE EARN BACK-TO-BACK BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEKS: Junior Karen Pavlick (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) were named the Big South Women's Soccer Players of the Week for the weeks of Sept. 21 and Sept. 28, respectively. Pavlick had 11 saves, one shy of a school record, in a 0-0 draw against East Carolina Sept. 18, while Gentile converted on a hat trick in Coastal Carolina's 5-1 win over USC Upstate Sept. 21.
GENTILE SCORES THREE IN UPSTATE WIN: Senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) had a hat trick in the 5-1 win over USC Upstate Sept. 21, recording Coastal Carolina's first three-goal game since 2007. Gentile opened the scoring in the 30th minute, sending a shot to the left corner of the net for her second goal of the season. Later, she made the score 3-0 in the 46th minute after beating the Spartan goalkeeper from five yards out. She finished her career night with a score in the 57th minute for the hat trick. Her three shots in the game all produced goals for a perfect shooting percentage on the night. The last hat trick by a Chant came on Sept. 14, 2007 when Ashleigh Gunning scored three goals in a win over Wagner.
TUPY SCORES A PAIR: Junior Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) scored a pair of goals in the win over USC Upstate. Tupy scored her first goal at 38:21 off an assist from sophomore Marissa Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) and had her second goal assisted by freshman Cami Skladany (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales). Tupy now has seven career goals as a Chanticleer.
PAVLICK CLOSE TO A SCHOOL RECORD IN ECU MATCH: Junior Karen Pavlick (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) recorded 11 saves in the 0-0 draw against East Carolina. She had four saves in each half and collected three in the two overtimes to preserve her third career shutout and the first shutout by the Chants this season. Pavlick almost broke Coastal Carolina's single-game saves record, which is 12 by Candice Doten in the program's first-ever game, a 1-1 tie against Appalachian State Aug. 27, 2000.
CHANTS TIE EAST CAROLINA: Coastal Carolina had its first scoreless draw since the 2007 Big South Tournament championship game against High Point in its 0-0 tie against East Carolina Sept. 18. It also was the seventh scoreless tie in school history. Coastal Carolina also is 1-0-1 against East Carolina the past two season. The Pirates were the 2008 Conference USA regular-season champions.
THOMAS SCORES HER FIRST CAREER GOAL: Freshman Morgan Thomas (Simpsonville, S.C./Southside Christian) scored her first career goal in the 8-1 loss to George Mason Sept. 13. Thomas scored in the second half on an assist from classmate Cami Skladany (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales).
HAGGARD GARNERS A CAREER HIGH: One week after junior Karen Pavlick (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) had a career high in saves, classmate Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) stopped a career-high seven shots in a 3-0 loss to William and Mary Sept. 11. Haggard's previous career high was six on three different occasions. On the season, Haggard has 19 saves in seven games.
TEIJELO GETS ON THE GOAL-SCORING BOARD: Senior Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) earned her birthday present Sept. 4 against Longwood, scoring her first career goal in a Coastal Carolina uniform in the 2-1 loss to the Lancers. Teijelo scored on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Teijelo is tied for 10th in career assists at Coastal Carolina, but scored her first goal in her 51st game in a Chant uniform.
CHANTS WIN SEASON OPENER: For the first time since the 2006 season, Coastal Carolina won its season opener. The Chanticleers defeated Jacksonville 2-1 in game one of the Osprey Classic Aug. 28 in Jacksonville, Fla. Coastal Carolina now is 4-5-1 all-time in season openers.
NILES ASSISTS IN SEASON OPENERS: For the third straight year, junior Sara Niles (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) assisted on a goal in a Coastal Carolina season opener. This time, she found sophomore Tori Strengari (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) for a goal to tie Jacksonville at 1-1. Niles now has seven career assists, which is one away from reaching Coastal Carolina's career top-10 assist list.
GENTILE DELIVERS ON GAME-WINNER: Senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) scored on a penalty kick at 64:14, breaking a 1-1 tie and giving Coastal Carolina a 2-1 win over Jacksonville Aug. 28. Gentile scored her first game-winning goal and her fourth as a Chanticleer. She leads Coastal Carolina after two games with four shots and two shots on goal.
WHO'S BACK: Coastal Carolina returns six starters and 15 letterwinners to the 2009 squad. While the backfield loses Chelsea Terry to graduation, seniors Corie Coles (Pilesgrove, N.J./Lynchburg College), Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Loyola (Ill.)) bring experience for the Chants defense. Junior goalkeepers Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) and Karen Pavlick (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) both saw playing time last season and return in 2009. Three of the four starters return in the midfield, as senior Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) and juniors Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) and Sara Niles (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) anchor the Chants in the middle.
CHANTICLEERS PICKED SECOND IN BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL: The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team has been picked to finish second in the 2009 Big South Preseason Poll, as voted by the League's head women's soccer coaches. The Chanticleers were just one point away from tying Radford University for the top spot. The Highlanders earned 86 points, including three first-place votes, to earn preseason favorite honors. The Chanticleers had 85 points and matched Radford with three first-place votes. Charleston Southern was picked to finish third, garnering 79 points and three first-place votes. High Point earned 69 points and was predicted to finish fourth. Liberty earned one first-place vote and had 56 points for fifth. Winthrop and VMI were picked to finish sixth and seventh with 55 and 42 points, respectively. They were followed by UNC Asheville (31 points), Gardner-Webb (27 points) and Presbyterian.
UP NEXT: Coastal Carolina continues its homestand Thursday, Oct. 29 against Gardner-Webb. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
