Women's Soccer Falls to Liberty 3-0

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (2-10-1, 0-2 Big South) gave up three first-half goals in its 3-0 loss to Liberty (4-6-1, 1-0-1 Big South) Oct. 5 in Lynchburg, Va.

Coastal Carolina was outshot by a slim 5-4 margin in the first half, but gave up three goals to the Flames. Liberty's Silvia Betancourt scored two goals in the first 8:05 of the match. Her first goal came at 6:56 on a cross from Maria Owen. Betancourt then fired a 15-yard shot with an assist from Elia Lake at 8:05. Just before the half, Liberty got on the board again on a penalty kick by Owen at 42:56. Junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) had two saves in the first half, while Liberty's Karen Blocker also had two saves in the first 45 minutes.

For the third consecutive game, Coastal Carolina outshot its opponent, as it held a 13-6 advantage over the Flames. Junior Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) and freshman Maggie McGavin (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led Coastal with two shots apiece, while Owen had four for Liberty.

Haggard ended the game with three saves, while Blocker had four for the Flames. There also were a total of 40 fouls between the two teams.

Coastal Carolina returns home to host VMI Saturday, Oct. 10 at 12 p.m.
