CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team fell to Presbyterian 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 8-15) on Senior Night at Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers fall to 16-12 and 9-5 in the Big South while the Blue Hose improve to 10-12 overall and 5-9 in the Big South.
The Chanticleers were led by junior Chelsy Kimes, who registered 17 kills and had a season-high six service aces while Megan Bickford added 11 kills and five blocks. Senior Megan Pollard tied her season digs with 23 and Meagan Tracey guided the team with 42 assists. Senior Jill Nyhof registered seven kills.
Lisa Shelley led the Blue Hose with 14 kills and 13 digs while Lindsey Harris, Presley Mabrey and Allison Brown combined for 24 kills. Amanda Kettles led the defense with eight blocks and Kile Ruppe tallied 51 assists.
Both teams fought hard through all five sets, forcing 48 ties and 27 lead changes throughout the match. Presbyterian finished with a .236 team attack percentage, compared to Coastal Carolina's team attack percentage of .182.
In the first set, the Blue Hose went out to an early 5-1 lead, but the Chants battled back to tie the set at 17-all. Both teams went back and fourth as there was five more ties and after the final tie at 24-all, Kimes put Coastal ahead with two service aces to win the set.
In the second set, Coastal and Presbyterian stayed neck-and-neck with neither team allowing the other to go on a run and gain momentum. There were 18 ties and 12 lead changes before the Blue Hose went on a 4-0 run to win the set and tie the match at 1-1.
The third set started where the second left off, forcing 14 ties. The Chants had an early 3-1 lead, but the Blue Hose came back to tie the set at 5-all. Both teams battled and flip flop points throughout until Presbyterian took its final lead at 22-21. The Chants tried to comeback, but the Blue Hose took the set on a kill by Lindsey Mabrey and a Chant error.
With neither team backing down, the Chanticleers tried to get their momentum started in the fourth set, but Presbyterian would not give up, forcing 14 ties throughout the set. Coastal Carolina took its final lead of the set at 18-17 and pulled together a 7-4 run to tie the match 2-2.
In the deciding set, Presbyterian opened with a 4-1 lead and kept its lead throughout the whole set. The closest the Chants would come to tying the set would be two points early in the set. Allison Brown and Lisa Shelley led the Blue Hose, each registering three kills, to help Presbyterian win the match.
The Chanticleers hit the road for their final two matches of the season. They travel to UNC Asheville on Friday, Nov. 13 and then Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Nov. 14. The Blue Hose travel to Winthrop to take on the Eagles Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
