WILMINGTON, N.C.-The Coastal Carolina University women's basketball team suffered a 70-40 loss to UNC Wilmington on Tuesday, Decmeber 15 at Trask Coliseum. The Chanticleers fall to 7-3 while the Seahawks are 3-4 on the season.
UNC Wilmington jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead to start the game. Kendra Reynolds tied it up with a lay-in, but was answered by a 7-0 Seahawk run that put them up 11-6 at 16:45 in the first. Reynolds shot a jumper and Katie White added a lay-up that put the Chants down one point, 11-10 at 15:20 . However that was as close as Coastal would get, as host UNCW outscored the visitors 30-8 over the remainder of the half to take a commanding 41-18 halftime lead. Coastal committed to 14 turnovers in the half that led to 20 Seahawk points.
Seahawk Martha White kept things going for the Seahawks by scoring four points to open the second half. At mid-second stanza, the Chanticleer defense held the Seahawks scoreless for nearly six minutes as Sydnei Moss scored three jumpers that trimmed the lead to 55-39 with 6:30 left in the game. However, Casey Sawhawk broke the scoring drought for the UNCW, sparking the Seahawks to a 13-1 run to end the game.
UNC Wilmington shot 50 percent from the field and scored 44 points in the paint. Brittany Blackwell got a double-double for the Seahawks by posting a game-high 13 points and grabbing 11 boards. White followed Blackwell with 10 points and eight rebounds. UNCW controlled the glass, doubling Coastal in rebounds 46-23. Coastal shot 32 percent from the field and went 7-for-13 from the line. Leading the Chanticleers was Moss with 12 points and Amanda Stull with nine.
The Chanticleers were without senior forward Devin Rivers due to injury. The Chanticleers will make a short trek to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center to take on Savannah State on Sunday, December 20 at 5 p.m .
