Men's Tennis Defeats Liberty, 6-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. – In the final regular season match of the year, the Coastal Carolina University men’s tennis team defeated Liberty 6-1 Saturday, April 11 at the Sport Racket to clinch third place in the Big South standings. With the win, the Chanticleers finish the season with a 15-5 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Big South. It is the best finish for the Chants during Head Coach Chris Powers’ five years at the helm.   Coastal Carolina doubles got the Chanticleers on the board with victories on each court. Senior German Perez and junior Ernesto Ramos earned an 8-4 win over Clay Cypert and Giancarlo Lemmi at No. 1. Juniors Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov took an 8-5 win over Chad Simpson and Gregorio Machado, while senior Joseph Withers and sophomore John Hairston earned an 8-5 win on court three over Otavio Costa and Juan Reyes.   In singles, the Chanticleers had wins on court one and two with Ramos defeating Cypert 6-4, 6-4 and Perez took a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Simpson at No. 2. Coastal Carolina’s last three victories came at the bottom half of the lineup with Tzvetkov’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Machado at No. 4, sophomore Dorian Sovic’s 6-3, 6-3 win against Costa at No 5 and Withers claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Reyes at No. 6. Liberty’s only point of the day came at court three, which went to three sets with the Flames’ Lemmi slipping past Vlaskin 6-4, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (6).   “We really came out firing on the doubles court and once again handled the elements well,” Powers commented. “Liberty was a spirited team and I think we matched their intensity with our focused play. We are feeling confident heading into conference and look forward to competing next week at the Big South tournament.”   Coastal Carolina will be seeded third at the 2009 Big South Championship being held in Rock Hill, S.C., at Winthrop. The Chanticleers will face No. 6 UNC Asheville Thursday, April 16 at 2 p.m.
