RIVERSIDE, Iowa - The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team moved up one more slot and finished third at the inaugural Golfweek Conference Challenge, Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, being hosted by Golfweek with assistance from the University of Iowa, was played at the Blue Top Ridge Course (Par 72 - 7,505 yards) in Riverside, Iowa.
The inaugural events pits 15 of the 2009 conference team champions from across the nation. The Chanticleers posted the third-best round of the day with a 2-over 290 and finished at 2-over 866. Florida State shot the best round of the day at 7-under 281 to move up from second to take home the team title at 11-under 853. Iowa was second at 861, while California finished in fourth behind the Chanticleers at 869.
Two All-Big South honorees from a year ago led the Chanticleers, as senior Sam Lyons and redshirt-sophomore Drew Ernst tied for fifth at 2-under 214. Ernst fired a 2-under 70 on his final round, the best of the day for Coastal Carolina. Sophomore Charlie Winegardner posted his first top-15 collegiate finish with a tie for 12th at even-par 216 after shooting a final round 1-under 71. Senior Dan Obremski tied for 30th at 6-over 222 while redshirt-freshman Daily Young tied for 68th at 19-over 235.
The Chanticleers will return to the course Fri.-Sat., Sept. 18-19 when they head to the site of the 2009 U.S. Open Championship, Bethpage Park in Farmingdale, New York, for the 2009 McLaughlin.
