CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team (16-3, 6-1 Big South) could not overcome a cold shooting night in falling 62-52 to Radford (9-6, 5-1 Big South) Jan. 14 in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers saw their 12-game winning streak snapped in the loss to the Highlanders.
Coastal was 19-of-60 from the floor (31.7 percent) and just 2-of-16 from three-point range. It was the second-lowest field-goal percentage of the season for the Chanticleers.
Coastal and Radford went back-and-forth early in the game, as there were five ties in the first 6:48. Coastal led 10-8 on a steal and dunk from Joseph Harris at 13:09, but Radford answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a Blake Smith three at 11:10. Coastal would cut the lead to 15-14 on three points from Chad Gray and a free throw by Logan Johnson. Radford then scored the next seven points, as five straight points by Art Parakhouski made it 22-14 with 2:10 left in the half. Dexter Moore answered with a three at 1:46, but Lazar Trufinovic's layup at 46 seconds gave the Highlanders a 24-17 lead. Coastal trailed by seven at halftime as two Parakhouski free throws made it 26-18 at the break.
Mario Edwards led the Chants with six first-half points. Johnson added five rebounds. Coastal went 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) in the first 20 minutes and were 1-of-11 from three-point range. Parakhouski had 11 first-half points and added seven rebounds.
Sam McLaurin's dunk right out of the lockerroom made it 26-21, but Radford had its biggest lead of the game (33-21) on a Trifunovic three. A three from Gray cut the lead to 35-28 with 14:09 left, but a three from Evan Faulkner and jumpers by Smith and Parakhouski extended the lead to 42-30 with 11:53 left. Chris Evans came off the bench and scored five straight points, cutting the lead to 44-38 with 10:24 left, but Radford got the lead back to double digits at 9:04 on a Smith jumper. Coastal could get no closer than six points on an Edwards' jumper at 3:18, but Radford scored the next six points in a 2:51 span, icing the win for the Highlanders.
Edwards led the Chants with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Harris had 11 points and nine rebounds. Harris also has his 1,000th rebound in the second half and needs 12 more boards to become the Big South Conference's all-time rebounding leader. Gray was the third Chant in double figures with 13 points.
Parakhouski had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and had three blocks for the Highlanders. Trifunovic added 16 points and eight boards. The Highs shot 41.7 percent from the floor and were 19-of-30 from the free-throw line.
Radford enjoyed a 41-38 advantage on the boards, while the two teams combined for nine blocked shots.
Coastal Carolina hosts High Point Saturday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m., in Kimbel Arena. Radford is at Charleston Southern the same day at 7:30 p.m.
