CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team has announced that Mike Holmes (Bishopville, S.C./South Carolina) will attend classes in the spring and be on the men's basketball team. Holmes will be eligible to compete in the games at the end of the Fall semester in 2010.
Holmes, a 6-7 forward, averaged 11 points and 4.8 rebounds a game in six contests in his third season at South Carolina. This included a 15-point performance against LaSalle in the Charleston Classic. Holmes saw action in all 31 contests as a sophomore, averaging 10.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. He had six double-doubles was sixth in the Southeastern Conference in rebounding. He had a career high 19 points against Presbyterian Dec. 23 and had 13 points and 11 rebounds against Clemson Dec. 20.
Holmes was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2007-08, averaging 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds in 30 games played. He had 18 points in a win at Auburn and scored 16 points in the SEC Tournament against LSU. Holmes also had a career-high 16 rebounds against North Carolina State.
The 2007 South Carolina Mr. Basketball, Holmes averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots as a junior at Lee Central High School in Bishopville, S.C. He helped the Stallions to back-to-back state titles his junior and senior years and scored 22 points in the state championship game his senior year, where he earned Most Valuable Player honors.
"We're excited to have Mike Holmes in our basketball program because I think the one thing that our team needs as much as anything is power and Mike brings that," Coastal Carolina Head Coach Cliff Ellis said. "He averaged 11 points a game in the SEC and is a strong rebounder. He brings that physical presence…He'll miss four or five games next year but be ready after that. I feel that he can help our team and I'm excited to have him in our program. He gives us strength and power."
Coastal Carolina, who is 16-3 and 6-1 in the Big South, hosts High Point Saturday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m.
