Chants Earn 1-1 Tie with Francis Marion

Oct. 13, 2010

Final Stats

CONWAY- The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team played Francis Marion to a 1-1 draw in a game that saw the Chanticleers statistically dominate the Patriots.

Francis Marion (3-11-2) was the first to score in the game after a foul was called in the Coastal Carolina box resulting in a penalty kick. Patriot Lauren Vetock lined up the penalty shot and fired it into the back of the net past a diving Amy Haggard to put the visitors up 1-0 after 37 minutes of play.

Coastal (6-7-1, 2-2-0 Big South) responded and netted a goal of their own in the 61st minute off the foot of freshman Kate Wilkinson from ten yards out. Wilkinson was able to defeat two defenders on her way to the goal and take the shot that went near post. Senior Karen Pavlick, who recently switched from goal keeper to forward, assisted on the goal with a pass to the streaking Wilkinson. The goal was the second on the season for Wilkinson while the assist was the first in Pavlick's career.

After Wilkinson's goal, the Chants continued to pressure the Patriot defense throughout the remainder of regulation and overtime out shooting Francis Marion by eight. Francis Marion goal keeper Lauren Vetock tallied four of her eight saves on the night during that stretch.

Sophomore Morgan Thomas had a last chance shot for the Chants as time expired in the second overtime period. As time wound down, Thomas turned and fired a shot on goal from the close left wing that would ultimately deflect off the crossbar ending the game in the 1-1 draw.

As the game was the fourth for the Chants in a ten day stretch, head coach Tammy DeCesare used her bench frequently throughout the contest. A total of 25 Chanticleers saw action in the game including freshman Jessica Johnson who took the field for the first time in a Coastal Carolina uniform.

The Chanticleers were lead by Wilkinson's three shots on goal finishing with a dominating 17-3 shot advantage in the match. Coastal combined for nine shot on goal compared to just two for Francis Marion and finished with a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Freshmen Wilkinson and Christina Stern along with sophomores Maggie McGavin and Laura Hordis tallied 12 of Coastal 17 shots on the night firing three, four, three and two shots each respectively.

Chants goal keeper Haggard finished with a single save on the night as she ran her record to 3-0-1 on the season.

Coastal will return to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 16 to take on the Blue Hose of Presbyterian at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field in a 6 p.m. kick off. The 2010 senior class will be honored before the match.
